At the monthly meeting of the District Branch of the Teachers' Institute, to-day several headmasters, while ap-J proving of the principle of medical in- J spection of children, wonsidered that; tho Department's schomo (as indicated I by the cards to be filled up) was ail; impracticable one. It was estimated: that half an hour would bo necessary i to examine each child—ollo speaker said an hour. It was decided to 6end ro-t prosentatives .to _ discuss the matter/' with the Education Board at its next meeting. _ Mr. M'Mahon (Wellington) was nominated as president of the Institute. Tho opinion was expressed that, in view of legislation next year, it was desirable to have the president in Wellington, FAMILY PROSTRATED. • 0 TINNED FISH AND PTOMAINE. Chrlstohuroh, October 5. A family named Ford, residing at St.' Albans, had tinned fish for. tea las! night. To-day they, are in tho hospk tal, recovering from an attack of ptomaine poisoning. Tho sufferers ara James Ford (locksmith), Alice Sarah Ford (his wife), Jack Ford, Allan' Ford, and George Ford (sons), Marjory Ethel Ford (daughtor). The dish that caused the trouble was turned herrings, of which all. tho family partook. They are all out' of danger now. ALTERCATION & AFTER. Inveroarglll, October 4. At Riverton last night a young man named Morgan, Hayeß was stabbed with a sickle, it is alleged by ail old man named Thomas Lynch, and now lies in hospital in n precarious 6ondition. During a heated altercation about eattlo trespass, Hayes is said to liavo struck • Lynch, and tho latter picked _ up a sickle, witli which ho made a drive, tho point entering Hayes's chest. Lynch lias been arrested and charged witb wounding with intent. MOUNTED CAMP. Oamaru, October 4. Tlio B squadron of the sth Mounted Rifles will go into camp here to-day at the personal expense of tho men themselves. They purnoso putting: in n year's training, including clnss-firing. The results will bo exemption from further service for a year, except the annual- training camps. MINE TROIJBIE ENDED. Wcstport, October 5 Tlio trouble at the Westport Coat Company's Denniston mine has been short-lived. Tho management's terms were submitted to the Miners' Union, and agreed to. The management mado it clear that work must not be_ stopped over such trivial causes. It is generally believed that tho company was prepared to sliut down tho mine for ail indefinite term had an amicable agree' mont not been speedily reached.
