—^ IMPROVEMENTS DESCRIBED. The improvements which are to ba made at the Central Public Library at an estimated cost of £700, and which wore outlined in n report presented by the Libraries Committee, are such as to evoke congratulations from_ the Mayor when the report was considored at tho meeting of the City Council. Foi< somo timo the necessity of prowling additional book space has become more urgent, and the city engineer was instructed to prepare a plan for tho provision of extra accommodation at tho reference room. This plan, which was l.iid on tho tnblo at tho meeting of tho City Council, provides for tho abolition of tho present main stair and tho construction of a book store in its placo on' tho upper floor, which will allow for the storage of between 15,000 and 16,000 books. The tower entrance to tho newspaper room will bo retained, but a liew entranced to bo made in Wakefield Street, which will enable residents to roach tho lending library, magazine room, and reference library. It will undoubtedly bo an advantage to separate in this way thoso who frequent tho newspaper room and tho patrons of the other departments. In addition, a ventilating shaft is to be constructed at the reading-room, and two etcctric fans aro to bo procured for uso in tho reading-room. The alterations are bo Dut in hand next February.
