Malthuti, M.A., tho Canterbury nominee for tho Rhodes Scholarship, lias a brilliant scholastic record. When 110 took his M.A. degree laßt year, with first-class honours in English and French, tho examining professor in French especially complimented him on the excellence of his papers. Mr. Malthus, who is 23 years of ago, is an old Timaru High School boy,' at which institution )ih waa head prefect, bolore 110 won a Senior National Scholarship which took him to Canterbury College. Later 110 won tho .Some's Scholarship, _ and a Senior, University Scholarship in English. Lieutenant l'iper, an old King's Collego boy now at Aldershot studying aeronautics, will shortly bo returning co Now Zealand on completion of his courso. In a lotler to a friond in Auckland, Lieutenant Piper stated that ho had been flying on several 'days at the Hondon Aerodrome with Sidney Pickles, the Australian aviator, who recently met with a serious mishap whilst carrying a passenger at Brooklands. Lieutenant W. B. P. Thring, accompanied by his wife, arrived in Auckland on Thursday by the Morayshire.' Lieutenant Thring was staff-officor of tho colonial forces at Singapore, and waa formerly statibnod at Pembroke, at Rangoon, and at Malta. , The death is announced from villo of Mrs. A. P. Smith, sister of tha Hon. E. Mitchelson.
With tho death of Mr. Thomas Stoker Dixon, which occurred on Saturday evening, another of Wellington's pioneers passed away. Mr. Dixon,'who was tho father of Mr. Robert Dixon, accountant to tho National Mutual. Assurance Company, was born in Sunderland (England) 83 tcbts ago. After serving an apprenticeship in his father's shipbuilding yards at that port, ho went to sea. . Ho arrived in Dunedin about tho year 1860, and after staying there for between two and three years canio to Wellington some fifty years ago. Ha entered into partnership with JLr. Paul Coffey (of Oriental Bay) in a shipwright's business; Their yards wera originally located about tho spot where tho To Aro Railway Station now stands, .but. subsequently they removed to 'Clyde Quay, to the site now occupied bj tho Boat Harbour. Tlio partnership was dissolved some thirty years ago. Later Mr. Dixon purchased a business in Palmerston North, but ho continued to resido in Wellington for tho greater part of bis timo. His health only began to fail noticeably about a fortnight ago. Ho leaves an adult family of Severn—■ Mrs. Stafford, of Marton; Miss Dixon, Messrs. Robert, William, Matthew, and Josepli Dixon, of Wellington, and Mr. Thomas Dixon, of Waitganui. Tho interment will be. private. Tlio Bishop of Wellington is to administer confirmation to about 55 candidates at St. Peter's on November 16. Mr. T. Gardener, who has . for eoma years been preparing for Holy Orders, is to-be ordained in December, and commenco duty in St. Peter's parish. Aftor a Borvieo extending oycr_ 41' years Mr. A. H. Hoycock, chiof" accountant and overseer for Messrs. Mur- ' ray, Roberts and Co., at their Head oflico at Duncdin, is being superannuated! and intends to take up other work • on h,iß own account. Mr. Hoycock joined tlio firm of Messrs. Murray, Roberta and Co. in tho year 1872.
Tho death occurred at an early hour this morning of Mrs. Mack, wife of Mr. M. J. Mack, scorctary of tho Amalgamated Socioty of Railway Servants. At Friday evening's meeting of tho Wanganui Harbour Board, Mr. F. C. Milhva.rd, who has been acting temporarily since the death of tho late secretary, was appointed permanently to tho position. Ml - . Geoffrey Elkington, of Masterton, who has been staying at tho Grand Hotel, returns to Masterton today. Mr. Ameliiis Smith, who has retired from tho position of secretary to tho Public Service Superannuation Board, was farowelled by a number of Ministerial privato secretaries nnd others in tho Caoinet roo-n at Parliament Buildings on Friday night. Tho Primo Minister, on behalf of the gathering, presented Mr. Smith with handsome gifts for himsel|. and M'rs. SmitL Mr. Massey expressed high appreciation of the Joyalty which Mr. Smith had always exhibited during tlio forty-seven years that ho had been connected with tho Service, in which timo ho had been connected with prominent publio men, ranging from. Sir George Groy to the Hon. J. Ballanco. Ho had done good 'vork. ho added, and was leaving tho Service' with a _ splendid record. (Applause.) In replying, Mr. Smith expressed appreciation- of tho, honour done him .oy tho Primo Minister in boing present on that occasion and in making tho presentation. Ho had givon tho best years of his life to the Sorvico, of which ho had been a member since ho was 21 years of af*e; ho had served under many distinguished men, and seen somo wonderful changes.
James Ames, tho City Valuer, \V'ho. has recently been on a health recruiting trip to Sydney_ and Auckland, is-now lying seriously ill in tho Davis Street privato hospital.
The .body of tho late Mr. James M'Alpine, a Government Inspector of Machinery, -who spent the best part of Ms life in Wellington.' was brought down from Auckland oy tho steamer Victoria on Friday, and buried in tho Karori comotery on the following afternoon. Tho funeral was attended by a largo number of people, including many members of- tho Institute of Marino Engineers. . '
