CASE OF S.S. TYRONE.

SALVAGE OPERATIONS. THE WEATHER UNPROPITIOUS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Dunodln, October 3. To-day was a disappointing ono for, those devoting their skill and onergy to tho hazardous task of refloating tho Tyrone. A strong sou'-wester raised a fairly heavy sea, and it was found impossible to transfer any gear from tho tug to the ship. Tho Terawhiti, with Mr. M'lntyre (the Union Company's superintendent of repairs) and Captain 'King went to the scene about 10 a.m., and stood by till 4 p.m., when the tug was compelled to return without having accomplished anything. Tho steamer is lying quito firm, and no seas are breaking on board. The conditions aro therefore favourable for tho survoyors and workmen on board. It is proposed to make a very early start with the Torawhiti to-morrow morning, and thoso in charge of operations aro sanguine that the weather conditions will enable them to make effective progress. The divor continued his investigations to-day, but there is nothing fresh to report. Tho Collector of Customs at Dunedin has' been advised by the Minister of Marine that Captain Sundstrun (Dunc3in) and Captain Hunter (Lyttelton) have been appointed as assessors to sit with Mr. Widdowson, S.M., on Tuesday, to inquire into the circumstances leading up to tho stranding of the vessel. REMARKS BY SIR J. MILLS'. In the course of a conversation with a Dominion representative yesterday. Sir, James Mills, managing director of tho Union Steam Ship Company, stated with respect to the stranded steamer Tyrone that the salvage experts appeared to be fairly hopeful regarding the prospects of refloating the vessel, which appeared to bo rosting on a sandy bottom.. The loss of tho vessel was unfortunate. He was not awaro exactly how the vessel got into such a position, and had not seon the captain' of the Tyrone since the occurrence.
