DEATH OF MR. G. B. NICHOLLS.
' FATAL STREET COLLISION. Mr. Q. B. Nicholls, organiser of the No-Licenso Council, died at Christchurch Hospital yesterday afternoon, as tho result of a collision with a tramcar whilst on his motor-cycle on Thursday night. Mr. Nicholls was rounding the corner from St. Alban's Lano into i'apaliui Road, and swung on to the tram rails at. tho bond just as a Papanui car was rounding tho curve from the direction of Lcicestor Road. A violent collision was the result, and Mr. Nicholls was thrown heavily from his machine. Dr. Gerald Russell, who was passing, rendered first aid, but the motorist's condition was such that ho was conveyed to tho Hospital, where an operation was 'performed by Dr< GuthMr. Nicholls lay all night in a critical condition, and never recovered consciousness, having Bustainod concussion of tho brain. . Mr. G. B. Nicholls was for many vears a resident of Wellington, and will bo remembored as tho one-time proprietor of tho Golden Rule Bazaar, a toy and fancy goods ..emporium 'on Lambton Quay. In his youthful days he was a member of the Wellington Rowing Club, and was accounted a very hefty oarsman. Ho came into prominence in connection with tho No-License movement as honorary organiser in tho Wellington South' electorate in 1902, when No-Licenso was carried in that district. Ho afterwards took up the work actively, and was for eight years organiser for tho Now Zealand Alliance in Otago and Southland, with Dunodin as his. centre. Last year he was appointed to act in a similar capacity in Canterbury, with Christchurch as his centre. The Rev. John Dawson, secretary of tho Alliance, who received an urgent message at 6 p.m. yesterday announcing Mr. Nicholfs's death ( states that tho bo orodited with having accomplished excellent work for tho cause in which ho. was interested. He was a capital organiser, and not only was he a man of idoas, but ho had- the faculty of oarrying them out with persistence ahd ; earnestness. Ho was a worker who would bo greatly missed by the party. Mr. Nicholls, who was a man about 44 years of ago, leaves a wife and two children. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS. (By .Telegraph—Press Association.)
