Viscount Northland is the only son and heir of the Earl of Ranfurly, formerly Governor of Now Zealand, and it is after, him that' Wellington's hilltop suburb takes its iiamo. Viscount Northland (Thomas Uchter Caulfield Knox) was born in IBS 2, and was married last year to Miss Hilda Cooper, daughter of Sir Daniel Cooper, second baronet of Woollahra. He wos formerly captain of. the lorkshire Dragoons (Yeomanry), and later, a lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards. For a time he acted as one of the •A.D.C.'s to his father, during tho latter's torm as Governor of New Zealand. • Sir James Mills, who arrived from tho south yesterday, will leave foT Dunedin this evening. ' • Sir Chas. Bowen, Speaker of tho Legislative Council, left for tho south by tho Wahine last evening. ■ Mr. Alexander' Humo Ford, of Honolulu, editor of the "Mid-Pacific MagaBino," is a visitor to Wellington. He will be the guest of the New Zealand Club at luncheon on Tuesday next. • Colonels Richardson and Hayhurst were passengers for the, south by the iWahine yesterday. Mr. Latter, the now Head of the Wanganui Collegiate School, was educated at Marlborough,' of wliich' h<y was scholar and exhibitioner, and'at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, of which ho was a scholar.. He took first honours in Mods, and second in Lit. Humanioros. Since 1891 he was a master at Cheltenham. He has specialised in English teaching, and has re-organised the teaching of that subject at Cheltenham. Mr. Hugh Ward, of tho firm of J, O. Williamson, Ltd., leaves Sydney on • a trip to America during the owning .Week. • The Rov. P. W. Clarkson, vicar of Taihape, and official lecturer for : tho Bible-in-State-Schools League, is visiting Rotorua this week-end. Canon, Garland, organiser of tho league, is in Auckland. Mr. G. J. Garland, chairman of tho 'Auckland Board of Education, is visiting Wellington to interview the Minister of Education (the Hon.
