A salary of £600 per annum, according to tho "Otago Daily Times," is to be offered for tlio position of secretary of tlio Otago Harbour Board. The secretary will bo tho chief executive officer of the board, as it was decided- by the board' some few weeks ago to separate the presont dual position of secretary and engineer. Mr. Mason will continue, as heretofore, to occupy the offico of engineer. . Tho recommendations of the Forestry Commission are strongly disagreed with by the West Coast County Councils. At a recent conference the councils' delegates passed resolutions endorsing tho present law under which county councils get one-half of the royalties paid 'oil milling timber. Tho commission had recommended that this money should only go to the countics when tho timber was carted over their roads, and that otherwise it should' be expended 1 on reafforestation. Other resolutions adopted were that tlio jurisdiction and control of the warden remain as at present, and that a section be incorporated in the Act dealing with royalties, providing that in every case where tho royalty exceeds tho sum. duo as rent on licenses and reservations, tho ront chargo shall cease.
