THE STRANDED TYRONE.

DECISION OF U.S.S. CO. ABANDONED TO UNDERWRITERS: (Br M«crw>h.—Prtoj Aesoele-Uoa.) □unedln, October 2. It is understood that the owners of tho Tyrone' (tho Union Steam Ship Company) have formally abandoned tho vessel to Lloyd's underwriters. It now rests with tho underwriters to say whether tliey will accept tho abandon-, niont. Tho position is that Lloyd's people will conduct salvago operations on behalf of tho underwriters. for tho hull and cargo as well, the Union Company lending all tho assistance that it can. The insurances on tho hull aro held in England, while Now Zealand companies carry tho principal risks on tho cargo. It is said that the vessel is insured for about £75,000, and that tho 2000 tons of cargo on board aro insured for close on £20,000. Arrival of the Terawhltl. At 6 o'clock this morning the Terawhiti picked up tho punt at Harrington Point with tho big locomotive boiler on board, and towed it round to tho wreck. An attempt was at once made to hoißt tho boiler on to tho steamer, but, when Hi was about half-way up, a big Bca struok the Tyrone, and, as part of one of tho slings had become frayed, tho boiler was allowed to slip back into tho water. It was towed back by tho Terawhiti to the Spit at the Heads, where' tho slings were again mado fast, and was then again towed round to VVahino Point, and, after some arduous work, was placed on the deck of the Tyrone. Included in tho equipment on the TeraWhiti was a surf boat, which put in some good work, her performanoo (to ' those who have seen tho position in which the Tyrono lies) being remark-: able. Three times tho surf boat was safely navigated round tho stern of the stranded ship", carrying Balvago gear, and, after this, was hoisted top. Powerful Goar. The clown from Wellington two six-ton anchors, one sevoiv ton anohor, two, powerful pumps, and boilers, in addition ,to tho one already placed on tho Tyrone, a seven-inch wire lrnwser (said to'be tho biggest in tho, Dominion), and a largo number of smaller wire cables.. Most of this gear was used in connection with tno refloating of tlio Indrabarah. It is anticipated that it will take three days to' get all tlio salvage gear round to the wreok and have everything ready to make an attempt for a supreme effort. The procedure to bo adopted, it is under* stood, in the attempt at refloating is to lay anchors out to sea, connect them with hawsers to the steamer, and, as she lifts when the water is being pumped out, to pull on tho anchors with power supplied from tho Tyrono's engines. Tugs will also probably lend a hand ini tho haul. ' . The Case Not Hopolosa. An examination of the vessel's hull would seem to show that practically tlio whole damage is confined to that part outside No. 2 hold, although there aro some started rivets in other parts of tho ship. Mr. A. M'lntyre, superintendent of repairs for the Union Company, who has had a lot of experience in 'this kind of work, is very sanguine that - tho Tyrono will' ultimately be brought round to Port Chalmers. Captain It! S. Taylor, of the London Salvage Association, arrived in Duncdin by train from Lyttelton on Wednesday night, and went to seo the vessel this morning.
