9 A SERIOUS COLLISION'. NO-LICENSE ORGANISER INJURED. (By Telcsr«i>h—Press Association.) ' Chrlstchurch, October 2. Mr. G. B. Nicholls, organiser of the No-License Council, was seriously injured. to-night cs the result of a collision with a tram-car. Ono who witnessed the accident states that Mr. Nicholls was coming out of St. Alban's Lane; in Papanui Road riding his motorcycle, at a fairly high speed, so that he had to swing on to tho tram rails in taking the corner. A Papanui tram coming in from Leicester Road was approaohing the corner, and a violent collision occurred, the motorist- being thrown heavily. Dr. Gerald Russell was near at the time, and ho rendered first aid to the injured man, who. was bleeding from apparently serious injuries to his head. Mr. 'Nicholls was immediately conveyed to the hospital, and at nine o'clock an operation was performed by Dr. Guthrie. Inquiries made at a lato hour to-night showed that the patient sustained intercranial lmemorr'hago, with a probable fracture of tho base of tho skull. His condition is extremely critical. ( RESULT OF DRINKING. Ekotahuna, October 2. A man named Anderson was found dead yesterday in a wharo. At the inquest this afternoon a 'verdict was returned that death was due to alcoholic poisoning. MAN TAKES POISON. Palmorston North, October 2. A young married man, Walter Follas, a butcher, committed suicido at midday at the Phoenix Hotel by talcing poison. Ho succumbed a few minutes after taking a large dose. BONE IN THE THROAT. Auckland, October 2. Elizabeth Warner,, aged 67, died in tho hospital as the result of injuries caused by swallowing a piece of mutton bone, which lodged in her throat. The obstruction was removed by the surgeon, but the bone had perforated the gullet, and tho patient died as the result of hemorrhage. POISONING CASE. Arthur Potter, a labourer, 29 yearß of ago, lias been admitted to the Public Hospital suffering from tlio effects of poisoning. The police report that letters found indicate that poisoning was contemplated. Potter went to the house of his brother-in-law, Mr. Percy Minifio, in Newtown, on Wednesday afternoon, and soon afterwards was discovered tying in the washhouso. Mr. Minifio inquired what tho matter was, and Potter is reported to havo replied, "I have poisoned myself, Poroy." Potj tor's condition is not serious.
