BAPTIST PRESIDENT & PICTURE SHOWS.

Mr. W. White, tho new president of tho New South Wales Baptist Union, passed a severe judgment upon picture shows in the course of his address at tho opening of tho annual conference of tho union last week. "Restraint," he said, "is-necessary in our indulgence in tlie pleasures of the world. The trend of tho present day is overwhelmingly biassed towards an ever-increasing desiro for .the pleasuro of sport and theatrical and kindred entertainments. Nobody should condemn, but rather commend healthy sport,* but when wo become worshippers of sport and find little or no time for religious wo are verging on calamity. The arrival in our midst of the picture and vatidevillo sliows has provided amusement and attraction of a very questionable nature, and has had a serious and detrimental effect upon the spiritual lives and religious activity of many heretofore staunch Church workers I venture tho opinion, and do it deliberately, tliat the prevalance of theso places in our midst is destroying the moral fibro of our rising generation. How often do we find our church members present at these places when they should be at the church prayer meeting? Are they not. hindering instead of lielping their, ohildren?"
