PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr. W. S. Douglas, editor of the "New Zealand Herald," died yesterday morning after a long illness, Bays a Press Association telegram. Mr. Douglas was born in Perthshire, ScotLand, and ia 1873 commenced his press experience as a junior reporter. Five years later ho became editor of the Leeds "Daily Nows" (England), remaining there from 1878 to 1881, when acceptance of an engagement on tho editorial staff of tho Auckland "Herald" necessitated a severance of liis connection -with the English journal. In 1903 ho became editor-in-chief of tho. "Herald," but in tho past few yearß his health has not been of the best. Deceased was chairman of tho Auckland branch of tho New Zealand Institute of Journalists in 1895, and president of the institute in 1903-4. Ho was a Now Zealand representative at tho Imperial Press Conference in 1909, and acted as secretary for the Now Zealand 6<?ction. Mr. Douglas was a Follow of the English. Institute, and a member of tho Empire Press Union. The late Mr. Douglas was the author of numerous short stories, poems, etc. Mr. Douglas was in his 57th year. He loaves a widow and a family of five, including Mr. W. Douglas, of New Plymouth; Mrs. Harry of Buenos Ayres; and Mrs. W. S. Swinburne, of Parnell.

Sir James Mills, managing direotor of tho Union Company, will arrive m Wellington from tho south by the Wahino this morning. The Hon. J. Barr was a passenger for tho south by tho Mararoa laßt evening. Tho Hon. C. H. C. Hardy and the Hon. G. J. Smith left Wellington for tho south by the Maunganui last evening. Mr. F. W. T. Rowley has been oppointed Chief Inspector of Factories as from oct6ber 1, in succession to Mr. Lomas.

Mr. Grayson informed a inend ! that he would mako the trip as soon as ' circumstances permitted. : Captain Seddon is understood to have tendered his resignation of his position as .officer in charge of tho No. 2 (Hauraki) area, and to be returning, from Paeroa, his present headquarters, to Wellington. Mr. James Jordan has been appointed clerk of the Magistrate's Court and Deputy-Registrar of tho Supreme Court at Napier. Mr. George A. Smith has been appointed Official Assignee at .Christchurch, and Mr. Richard Price Deputy Official Assignee at Napier.
