HUTT & PETONE NEWS.
(Prom Our Special Correspondent.) $ MOTOR-BUS SCHEME. Progress by the Potone Transit Co., which was formed several months ago for the purpose of running a motor-bus servico in Petono, has been slow. A forward move is, however, expected to be made in the course of a few weeks. At present tho company has under consideration the quostion of one or two . buses, and is necessarily marking time meanwhile. It is stated round tho Hutt Valley that a motor omnibus company is being formed in Wellington, for tho purpose of running motor-buses from Wellington to tho Hutt Valley. PETONE SEWAGE SCHEME. Tho pipes for the Petono sewage .scheme have arrived l in Auckland by the Morayshire, and on delivery at Petono a commencement will, be made with the laying. Tho timber for trenching has arrived, while finishing off work has been oarried out at the settling tank and the outfall Bewer. COURT RETURNS. The quarterly returns of the Petono Magistrate's Court show that 63 persons, including five females, were brought before tho Court on various charges. Altogether £10 2s. was collected in civil fees, fines amounting to £26 los. On tho oivil side 31 plaints wero issued, and of £266 Os. sa. sued for, £122 4s. lOd. was recovered. Three judgment summonses were issued', and two orderß made. HUTT VALLEY GAS. A special meeting of the Hutt Borough Council is to be held on Monday next, when a report submitted by the gas engineer engaged by the council to- inquire ii)to pressure, reticulation, and proposed improvements will bo considered. On this report depends the question as to whether the existing gas agreement between tho Hutt and Petono Councils is to bo extended for a further term of seven years. The question of tho erection of new municipal offioes in place' of the present leased ones will be considered, and a sketch plan of a suitable building will come under review. Tho Martin's Subdivision dispute will also be further discussed. NEW SALVATION HALL. 'It is proposed by tho Salvation Army authorities to erect a new hall at Lower Hutt. Arrangements been made for tho building of the hall, but the scheme did not materialise at the time. Now, another site has been purchased in a good central position, near the Town Hall at the Hutt, and it will not be long before building operations are in progress. HUTT RIVER BOARD. Tli© monthly meeting of the Hutt River Board was held last night. Those present were: —Messrs. R. H. Baldwin (chairman), M. W. Welch, W. Bowers, and A. D. Kennedy. Intimation was received from the Hutt Borough Council to tho effect that tho council regretted that owing to both physical and legal difficulties it could not see its way to grant tho board's application for a right-of-way through the gasworks Bite on tho Hutt- Road.—Received. A letter was received from the Hutt Borough Council in reference to the proposal to erect municipal offices on its property in Main Street, opposite tlio Town Hall, and inquiring whether the board would be likely tp become a tenant, provided suitable accommodation wero offered. _ On the motion of Councillor Welch, it was decided to write to tho effect that the board was willing to .fall in with the suggestion. It waß reported that the river gauge at tho Hutt Bridge had indicated only one big rise in tlie river during the month. That was on September 7, when the river rose five feet and a half above summer level. The board discussed several clauses in the River Boards' Amendment Bill, which is to como before Parliament shortly. It was decided that tho chairman auc. tho board's clerk wait on Mr. T. M. Wilford, and bring under his notice several clauses which are thought to detrimental to the board. In this respect a letter was also received from Mr. Wilford, intimating that he had conferred with Mr. Herdman on the matter. A further letter was received from tho Hutt Park Wool and Produco Co., Ltd., in regard to _ its leasing of Gear Island, and proposing alterations to tho lease. Tho board _ decided to adhere to its original decision in regard to ono of the alterations, and tho writers are to bo informed accordingly. The monthly report of tho board's overBeor (Mr. E. Fisher) was adopted. LABOUR DAY CARNIVAL. A meeting of the Hutt Valloy Labour Day Carnival Committee was held last evening. Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor) presided. It was decided to hold an open-air concert on the Recreation Ground on Labour night, and a committee was appointed to carry out the entertainment. A sub-conimitteo was set up to interview tho band in regard to scouring its services. It was decided to solicit trophies for one week prior to Labour Day. A strong sports committee was elected, and the secretary reported that everything pointed to a successful day's outing. A procession committee was also appointed, and in view of tho fact that societies from the whole Valley aro participating the carnival promises to be a successful one. ODD NEWS ITEMS. Judging by tho rehearsals of the P-etone Comedy Club tho pieco, "Tom, Dick, and Harry," to be played on October 6 and 7, ought to be a creditable performance. Tho proceeds are in aid of tho joint funds of tho Municipal Band and District High School Committee. A meoting of tho Hutt Park Conir mittee is to be held on Tuesday next. There was a good attendance last • evening at the Court Epuni A.0.F., Potone Lodgo. A visit was received from tho district officers. One candidate was initiated.
