NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[BT Glencoi.] In connection with the Wellington Racing Club's Spring mooting, owners are reminded that nominations close at 9 o'clock to-night with the club's secretary, Mr. A. E. Whyte. Nominations for important events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan meeting also closo to-night. Owners are reminded that acceptances for the first day's events at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting closo tonight. Mr. J. F. Hartland, secretary of tho Auckland Racing Club, will take entries to-night for important events to be run at the Spring and Summer meetings of his club. The result of the Jockey Club Stakes —the second of the English ton thousand pound races—should reach here bv cablegram to-day'. ' Prince Palatine was engaged, but the Hold apparently

did not include any of this season's , classic winners. The Highden jockey, W. Bell, is leav- ■ ing for Dunedin on Monday night. He is to ride the Yaldbursfc horses at the Wingatui meeting on Wednesday and Saturday next. As Mr. C. O'Connor will bo engaged at the Auckland Trotting Meeting on October 16, the Masterton Club will have to secure tho services of another starter on that date. Perhaps' Mr. T. Cameron will bo induced to come out of his retirement for this meeting. C. Emerson has been engaged to ride . Graftoliuo in tho Epsom Handicap and ' Einporador in the Metropolitan Handicap.. A. Oliver will bo oil Gigandra in tho Epsom, but, when the last mail left, lie had not booked for tho Metropolitan, and evidently was waiting ou the chance of a good mount turning up at tho last moment. On Wodne'sday morning a commission was worked in Wellington for ltinaldo in the New Zealand Cup. A wager of 1000 to 60 was taken in one hand, and several other smaller parcels were secured. The bay colt is now favourite. "With his Hastings penalty lie will'only have to carry 7st. 61b. in the Cup, M. Hobbs, in charge of Mowbray and Rinaldo, returned from Hastings last evening, and caught the southern boat. Bou Reve and Prelusive were on tho same boat. Hobbs has Ogier, Mart-el, and a two-year-old engaged at tho Dunedin meeting. These will probably be sent to Wingatui to-morrow in chargo of a stable hand. Hastings people are confident regarding Soltano's chances in tho A.J.C. Derby to-morrow. They expect him to dispute favouritism with Berragoon at the eleventh hour. One sportsman who has just returned from Sydney states that there was every indication when lie loft that Berragoon would bo overdone before the day of the race. Word from Auckland states that B. Doeley will not be able to ride till the Wellington meeting this month, . ..It goes, almost without saying,, that: by; that time the crack jockey's accident will have become an expensive matter to him. Bon Raid, winner of the Maiden' Handicap at Hastings, was entered foi- tho New Zealand Cup, but was allowed to drop out-at the first acceptance. Mr. A. J. Toxward's filly a good impression by the way in which sho won at Hastings, and a good future for her seems assured. Mr. W. Nidd, of Wellington, is gonerally accounted a very fortunate owner, but, recently, ho bewailed his luck ill taking ill at Christchurch last November, and being unable to attend the yearling sales, at which he liad intended purchasing tho Bezonian filly Prelusive, half-sister to Peroneal and Per-., onilla. It is just a question now whether his good luck did not really remain with, him, 'for oil the showing of the Yaldhurst. filly in the Hastings Stakes she is not quite what sho was supposed to be. Youngsters such as Reputation, Chime, and Brocade are likely, to finish in front of her when next they meet. v Several horses which did not sport silk at Hastings on Wednesday will bo racing at Napier Park to-morrow.
