.THE VANCOUVER SfiEVIGE. ", The Prime Minister was f asked by ' Sir. A. Harris, M.P., in the House of . yesterday whether his ) attention had been called- to the sub-
stantial'.advantage conform! upon "Wellington as against Auckland shippers of y butter to San Francisco and Voncouver, whereby tho former were enabled, to v ship at a through freight of Id. per pound, whereas Auckland shippers under existing arrangements had to pay 1 l-0d..t0 ljd. per pound, according to the route used, for the same servicc; and whether, he would tako immediate steps to seo that both .Wellington and Auckland shippers were, placed upon exactly tho samo footing. }' ■ Mr. Massey replied:"The position is that Wellington shippers cannot send butter to Vancouver .via-'San Francisco unless, it happens that tho space is not wanted -for butter consigned to Sail ■ Francisco, and,, as a matter of fact, tho whole of tho space up to and .including December'is required for San ■Francisco shipments. It is understood that Auckland shippers may solid butter to San Francisco via Vancouver at a freight of Id. par pound, provided - that-tho space is not required for butter consigned to Vancouver. The ,Union Steam Ship Company is being asked to confirm this understanding, ' hut in,view of the present promise of the trade to both Vancouver and San 3 r rancisco, there seems but little prospect of butter being taken to either of these ports for transhipment to tho other." .
