ASYLUM INQUIRY.
THE INSTITUTION INSPECTED. (B7 TalflsrßDh.—Pros. AMooifttaon.) Christchuroh, September 30. To-day the Commissioner, Mr. V. G. Day, together with representatives of tho parties, visited tho Suniiyside Mental Hospital, to seo for themselves exactly what the conditions wero. The whole of the big institution was thoroughly explored, both departments (men's and women's) coming in for closo scrutiny. Particular attention was directed to tho room in which tho lato Mr. Tribe was placod, and tho conditions as to ventilation, light, and warmth were carefully noted, together with 'the sleeping accommodation and general comforts of the room. The corridor in which the patients undressed—a practice complained of by some of tho witnesses at the inquiry—was also examined w'ith interest, together with the airing-yard in which the late Mr. Tribe is said, to have had bis eye blackened. Tho different wards for tho accommodation of different types of patients came under full review, and opportunity was also taken of examining closely, such classification as is carried on in the institution, and the opportunities for further improvement 111 this direction. The conduct of the patients, also tlieir general treatment, their food, and their living and sleeping conditions, were all matters taken into consideration by the Commissioner. Tho Commissioner will resume taking evidenco at 10.30 a.m. to-morrow. Dr. Gow and sevoral attendants have yot to be examined.
