Vioe-Reoal. His Excellency the Governor and tho Countess of Liverpool returned from their first visit to Napier last evening. They wero given a civic reception at Napier, and His Excellency was presented with an address expressing tho pleasure the people of Napier felt at the visit of their Excellencies, _ and representing the usual loyal sentiment t.) King and Crown. An official luncheon in the Masonic Hotel followed tho ceremony. The death occurred yesterday, after a long illness, of Mr. Wm. Mitchell Wilson, ono of tho partners in tho firm of Messrs. Georgo Thomas and Co. Deceased, who was a son of tho late Mr. B. M'. Wilson, was only 38 years of ago. He entered the employ of Messrs. George Thomas and Co. on leaving school, and was admitted into partnership in the firm some five years ago. Deceased was an enthusiastic cricketer in his youth, and was also-a keen follower of football. Ho leaves a wife and three children.

Mr. Hugh Latter, of the Cheltenham College staff, has been appointed headmaster of the .Wanganui Collegiate School (states a Press Association cablegram from London, received last evening). Deep regret was expressed amongst shipping peoplo this morning, telegraphed our Auckland correspondent last night, when it was learnt that Mr. James M'Alpine, Government Inspector of Machinery, had died yesterday at his residence, Lawrenco Street, Ponsonby. Mr. M'Alpine, who was only thirtyseven years old at the timo of his death, joined the Union Steam Ship Company in 1899. In 1911 he was appointed chief engineer of tlio turbine steamer Loongana. A short timo afterwards, however, bo resigned tho scrvice to accept the Now Zealand Government position of Inspector of Machinery at Auckland. Tho flags on vessels in port and over a number of shipping offices were flying at half-mast, as a mark of ro& p'eot to tho deceased gentleman. Doceased was a son of Mr. Jamos McAlpino, of Wellington, and has left a widow and young family. The body fs being brought to Wellington by tho Victoria.

Mr. F. V. Waters, Assistant Secretary of tlio Post and Telegraph Department, lias been presented by the members of tho Departmental choir with a silver-mounted ebony baton, in recognition of his valued services as conductor. liliss Gannaway, the choir's conductor, has received a gold pendant from the same quarter. Mr. 11. S. Hurries, brother of tho Hon. W. H. Horries, Minister of Railways, arrived from Loudon by tho Atiicnic yesterday. . Mr. J. L. Perry, of New Plymouth, returned from a trip to England by tho Athonio yesterday.

Waldon, F.R.G.S., a meml bor of tho British Parliamentary party, arrived at Invercargill by tho boat from Melbourne to-day, and afterwards left for Queenstown, whore lie will remain till Wednesday, aftor which ho will tour tho Dominion, remaining about a month. Ho will later visit South Australia and Western Australia. He intends to learn nil about Now Zealand agriculturally, commercially, and politically. Ho stated to a reporter that British overseas trade this year would easily break all previous records, and that they would havo to seriously consider at Homo tho establishment of a system of military training similar to that in voguo in New Zealand and Australia. —ProBS Association. Mrs. 0. Todhuntor and Miss A. Todhuntor, of Canterbury, arrived from London by tho Athenio yesterday. Bookings at the Hotel Windsor yesterday included Mr. Bibby (Waipawa), Mr. Moss (l'ahiatua), and Mr. F, WalkToy (Mangatainoka). Mr. Geo. E. Harding, of Johannesburg, is among tho visitors staying at tho Grand Hotel. Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Association, returned from tho Hawko's Bay district on Sunday. Mr. J. Cannot, of the Royal Comio Opera Company, is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Mr. A. A. Paape, who is about to tako up duty as organiser for tho Reform l'arty, was entertained at . tha Grand Hotel last evening by a number of friends, who wero associated with him in the Citizens' Carnival Association. Mr. W. Organ presided, and proposed tho toast of "Our Guest, 1 ' while fifteen of those present supported the toast with two-minutes speeches, wishing Mr. Paapa success in his new ofljco.

Miss J. C. Leadhum, of Canterbury, was a passenger from Englaud by the Athenic yesterday. Warrant Officer Cawood is. said to be the oldest volunteer officer in the British Empire, having served for over fifty years under ; the flag. He was for many years attached to the old 3rd Regiment at Parramatta, where ho obtained tha good conduct servico niedal for completing 20 years' service. As tlio Imperial service medal is given for 25 years servico, the friends of tho now-retired officer, who is a popular identity in the Cumberland district (Now South Wales), are endeavouring to obtain this distinction for Mr. Cawood.

Mr. J. Findlay, who comes to New Zealand us representative in. chief of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, arrived from Loudon by tho Athenic yesterday evening.
