PRESIDENT ULYSSES S. GRANT ON THE BIBLE.
« (To the Editor.) Sir, —The. following is Ulysses S. Grant's opinion of the Bible, viz.:— Hold fast to the Bible as the sheot anchor of your liberties: write its precepts on your hearts and practiso t'hem them in your lites. To the influence of this book wo are indebted for the progress made in. civilisation, and to this we must look as our guide in the future. • After reading your interesting account of his soil's visit to New Zealand, which appeared in to-day's Dominion, I send above as it is an argument in favour of ftible reading in public schools. President Grant would not travel on Sundays by train unless absolutely necessary.—l am, etc.. ' . AN IRISH-COLONIAL. September 29j 1913. John Quincey Adams: So great is my veneration for the Bible that the earlier my children. begin to read it the more confident will bo my hopes that they will prove useful citizens of their country, and respectable members of society. Abraham Lincoln: In regard to tho Great Book, I liaivo only to say that it is the best gift which God has given to men. Wm. McKinley: Tho more profoundly we study this wonderful book and the more closely wo observe its divine precepts the better citizens we will become and the higher will be our destiny as a nation.
