HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(Prom Our Spccial Correspondent.) Tho newly-formed' No. 3 Building Society of Petono, at a meeting on Friday presided over by Mr. A. Anderson, decided to offer 500 shares, 50 being taken up at the meeting. Tho following were elected directors':—Messrs. Anderson, Wadsworth, Breeklebank, Barber, M'Donald, Hey,, and Watson, and Mr. H. Dimant was appointed secretary.

A rifle match between the'. Petone' Rifle Club and its veterans was fired 1 on Saturday afternoon on the Waiwetu range. Tho conditions were.: Ten shots at 500 and 300 yards. Good shooting was done at 500 yards, three members scoring .49 each out of a possible 50, and Rifleman H. Russell made a possible. President S. V. Burridgc made top scoro (91) for tho veterans, and Rifleman C. 11. Morris was highest for tho club (91). Tho result was a win for the club by ■64 points. Several lamp-posts and other public property having been damaged lately, apparently tho work of youths in Petone, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) in speaking of the matter expressed the oninion that boys should be taught at school to value and protect public property, and should be shown that lampposts, taps, etc., are tho property of the community of which tlieso boys form a portion. The caretaker of the Koro-koro dam (Mr. C. Davis) Inst week came across tho mutilated bodies of about 40 sheep and lambs, apparently tho work of dogs, watching an opportunity ho waited ono night and shot two of the dogs, then notified the owner of the sheep and also the owner of the dogs. St. James's (Anglican) Church, Lower Hutt. was crowded yesterday, tho occasion being tho visit of Bishop Sprott. Fifteen ladies and three young men were confirmed, and an imorcssivo sermon was preached bv the Bishop.
