The only link connecting Jones with tho crime was certain horseshoo prints in tho vicinity of a fire which were said to resemble tho shoes of a horse owned by Jones and of a boot worn by Jones. The Mathinna murder mystery originuted with the mysterious disappearance of a farmer named Mullins, a well-to-do farmer, who had gone out 'possum hunting and had never returned*. Searchers discovered tho debris of ft huge fire in a depression on a hillside, containing human bones, teeth, a staple hsed for straps, and a quantity of melted lead. Mullins was wearing lioavy boots,. with iron-capped heels, and a belt. No trace of these was found. .The footprints of a large and small boot were discovered, also impressions of horses' hoofs. The theory was that Mullins, when cxamiiiinp opossum traps, was shot by n person lying m wait, and the body thrown across a horse and carried two miles to the spot where the pyre had been prepared. Sfullins and Jones had been on unfriendly forms.
