Owing to indifforent health. Mr. Frank Greene, tho baritone or tho Royal Comic Opora Company, has been compelled to take a rest, and has returned to Australia. His part in "The Quakor Girl" will bo taken by Mr. Edmund Sherras. Messrs. Paul Dufault and Franklin: Holding, of tho Nordica Concert Company, were guests at tho Wellington. Lewis, at Fiji. Deceased practised as a solicitor many years ago at Hastings, whore he was for a long time in command of tho volunteers. Nowb iB to hand of the death of tho Rev. Joseph J. Doke, for seyeral years pastor of tho Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, Christchurch, and lately pastor of the Central Baptist Ohurch, Johannesburg. Sir. Doke had just achieved considerable fame by his novel entitled "Tho Secret City," and had resolved to spend tho profits accruing from it in missionary exploration in >fche interior of Africa.,,His.son.Clement accompanied him, and they had a journey, which, in his last letter, Mr. Doke de-«. scribed ,as wild and wonderful. They reached Ndola, in North-west Rhodesia, near the Congo border, and then pressed on to IJmtah, on the opposite side of Rhodesia, but there Mr. Boke's strength failed and he died of enteric fever. His brother died many years ago at one of tho Congo stations of ,the Baptist Missionary Society. Mr. Doke has left a wife, three sons (two of whom have 1 dedicated their lives to missionary service), and a daughter.

Old residents of Port Chalmers will learn with regret of the death of one who was associated with tho place in its early history—Mrs. J. B. Taylor (nee Miss Margaret Davidson). Deceased arrived in 1860 by the ship Storm Cloud, and four years later married Mr. Taylor, who was particularly well known in Volunteering circles, being lieutenant in the Port Chalmers Navals and captain of the Artillery. After 30 years' rosidonco at Port Chalmers the family; removed to Mokoreta, near Wyndhani, and since 1890 have been engaged in farming. There died recently at Roscommon, in Ireland. Mrs. • Ellen Mullany, at the patriarchal ago of 105 years. Mrs. Mullany had fourteen grandchildren, and thirty-sis great-grandchildren, and among her children are Mrs. A. Stan, ley and Mr. M. Mullany, of. Christchurch. Mr. C. F. M. Wroughton, manager of the Asliburton branch of the Union Bank, will retire at tho end of September. Mr. Wroughton has been in tho employ of the bank for over thirtyeight years, and has had charge of the Asliburton branoh on three occasions. Mr. W. Lawrence, lato borough inspector for Port Chalmers, who is leaving for Auckland, was presented witli a purse of sovereigns on Thursday evening as a parting souvenir. Mr. A. A. Paapo, recently appointed organising secretary for the Reform party, is being entertained at a complimentary dinner this evening at the Grand Hotel by friends associated with him in connection with tho Citizens' Carnival Association, to the success of which Mr. Paapo contributed materially.
