There was an "excellent attendance at Wanganui for the concluding day of the Spring meeting, but with such an attractive' card and favourable weather that was only to bo expected. Fields wero of averago eizo and apeculation was very heavy. The stipendiary stewards wero busy during the afternoon, and questioned several riders. A meeting of the stewards was. held to consider tho running of Postillion, but no action was taken. Later on the judicial body again mot to consider a complaint lodged by the trainer of Sam Pan against the rider of Phroso, who was alleged to have crowded Sam Pan at a hurdle. This was considered to bo accidental, and no action was taken. Tho first day's form worked out .well in the Owen Handicap, when Tree Lucerne hopped out in front and led tbb whole way, running tho race in the same fashion and in tho same timo as on the first day. Maltara began very smartly, and was with Tree Lucerne for a furlong, when Postillion displaced him., Tree Lucerne got round the bend tho best, and ho had the race in safe keeping as tho distance was reached. Horo Postillion and Makara were both being; hunted, but tho ohestnut horso held his own and won very, easily. Merry Frank was fourth, and thon came Royal Simon and Heather. Tho latter dwelt badly at the barrier, and this spoilt her chance. Rewi I'oto was again favourite in tho sprint hack race, but Sunbird, who was getting tho apprentice allowance, was also well backed. The two favourites wero tho last to leavo tho mark, but both ran great races, and at the, finish they filled tho places behind De-' niso Orme, who was in a prominent position the whole wav. At the start Portraiture led from Zion. but at tho threo furlongs post Sunbird, on tho outside, looked like a winner. Denise Oirno slipped 'up on; tho insido at tho distanco, and Rewi Poto then came on the scene, and though ho put in a wonderful run ho was unablo to roach tho chestnut mare, who won by a length. Sunbird was two lengths off. The fivo acceptors all went to the post for tho open hurdles. Tho public was divided in its selections, and all except Koran wero evenly backed. Ngatiruanni gave bother at the post, and after tho starter had endeavoured to get him to line no the field was released without him. Timothy Went off at a fast pace, and quickly spreadeagled tho field. Ngatimaru vainly attempted to run him down in the back stretch, but

[ the Sti Paul gelding outjumped everything, and won pulling up by threo chains. Goodwin Park camo fast in tho straight, and beat Ngatimaru for second placo. The time ot tho winner could have boen improved considerably, and ho is evidently a fair horso under a light scale of weights. Fivo was again the -main in- tho Hack Hurdles. Tho success of Timothy naturally assisted to send Phroso out a warm favourito. After leading over tho first fence, the Australian-bred mare was steadied, and Sam Pan made play for a milo, when T. Jones sent . tho brown mare along, and sho soon put her supporters out of siispeUGo. Jumping t-lio last i'onco cleanly, sho wag, then eased up, and Bam Pan got to within a length of her at tho post. Floss fell at tho fence opposite : tho stand, but her ridor was uiiinjurdd. An objection against tho winner for boring was dismissed. ■ Tho Wellington-owned mare Peroneal Bcorod in tho Higgle Handicap after a groat Bet-to with Leonta, who was only boateri by a nose.- Tho former Was in front all the way, and got round the turns liko sho always ■ does, while the big horso had to go round the whoio field. 0. Price got him.uj) to a good position, and then gavo him a spell, but in tho end it was unavailing,! a( Poroneal' stuck to her task well, ami just lastod long onough. Mulga JJifl. got a bad pump at the half-mile, npd -this stbpped him, but lie had run well up to this stage. Coil tho Sliaugliraun .was prominont to tho straight, entranco, but lie then failed. Byron ran a good solid race tho whole way, so did Roosevelt, vvho was fourth at the finish., Passadena lightened up a lot, and was not'seen to advantage. i , A good favourito in tho Fordell-trniiit ed horse Austin ran homo in the Mou-: toa Hack Race.- At the start Styrax led from Austin, with Darby Paul tailed off, a position he occupied throughout tho ra6o. The rest of the field closed oil Styrax as tho straight was entered, and shortly afterwards Austin shot out, and, holdinc his own, ho ran. in a win-' nor by two lengths from Draft, who ran very wide at the turns. Kooya was in third place just clear of Styrax.' Tho winner looked on the big side, and can bo depended upon to do better at his next race. ' ' For th'e fourth time during tho afternoon there were fivo runners. This was fti tho Marangai Handicap. ' Gold Crest started a good favourito; but the 1 br'aok'eted pair, Bronze and Mallard was 1 also well supported, and tliey finished first and last. At tho start Gold Crest screwed, aud lost several lengths, while Smilax led off. _ At tho six-furlongs Gold Crest had joined Smilax, and the pair raced down tho back together, with the bracketed pair some longths behind. At tho half-mile Bronze and Manawa* ' kaha moved up, and the former joined tho leaders as tno straight-was entored. The race was now in hor keeping; and sho ran in a comfortable winner by a ; length. Smilax and Manawakaha had : a great finish for second place, arid the, former' just got there. • Gold Crest did ' not display .the dash lie did on . thai opening day. Toa Tero was always favourite in tliof St. John's Hack Welter, but Kow and Achilledes wero also in demand. Tho favourite, displayed great dash, and ■„ after getting off in the centre of tlio • field/ ho ran to the' front, pulling, at the quarter-mile post. However, the. race was far from over, for Kow ; on' whom W. Price was riding a waiting raco, challenged him at the turn, and despito the vigorous efforts of J. Con-, quest tho' chestnut gelding wore liirn' 1 down in the last couple of strides, and won by tho narrowest of margins. In third placo was AchilledeSj who wis awkwardly placed iii the first part, li'iff later his pilot succeeded in gotting liiiri • a nice run u on the feneo. ~-~ •• ■ in:..
