HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

I (r rom Our Special Correspondent.)

The audionce which greeted Mr. A. J. M'Curdy (one of tho candidates for the Upper Mutt Town Board) on Wednesday evening was a , largo ono. Mr. N. J. Bennington presided. Tho candidate traversed the progress of settlement in Upper Hutt leading to the establishment of local self-government. Under tho county only ratepayers had opportunity of voting. He outlined tho efforts which had brought about the erection of the Town Hall and his connection therewith; also tho securing of a water site at Akatarawa, and the subsequent adoption of a scheme to givo effect to the £11,000 loan raised in connection therewith. He then traversed the question of erecting a pipe bridge at Akatarawa, characterising it as needless. Ho considered that the present arrangement with the Hutt County sufficient for all purposes for years to como and that two 3-inch pipes, instead of oneeight inch pipes (to which tho county objected) would keep up a full supply and savo the ratepayers about £500. Tho question of getting expert assistance in tho matter of grading and road construction was, he thought, throwing money away. After getting out costly plans the board found itself unable to carry them out. It had been stated that his dismissal from tho clerkship, had been on account of failing to carry out tho board's instruction. To that 110 wished to remark that other employees of the board had done more than they had been ordered to do.
