MONTHLY MEETING.
CHEESE STORE CHARGES.
Tho monthly meeting of the ■Wellington Harbour Board was held last evening, tliero being present: Messrs. R. Fletcher (in tho chair), M. Cohen, J. W. M'Ewan, R. A. Wright, H. L. Nathan, J. G. Cobbe, A. M'Farlane, W. T. Hildroth, A. D. Kennedy, J. Trevor, A. H. Hindmarsh, and Captain D. J. Watson.
Tho board (in special meeting) considered the adoption of a by-law governing the now elieoso 6toro 0 11 Waterloo Quay. Tho' following charges were suggested;— (a)Cheese received from rail or town for grading prior to shipment, 3s. 6d. per ton for ten nights, with an additional charge of Is. for a week or fractional part of a week; (b) cheeso landed from vessels for grading prior to transhipment,. 3s. for ten nights, with an additional Is. per week; (c) graded cheese landed for transhipment,. Is. 9d., additional Is. per week; (d) graded, cheeso_ from rail or town for -shipment or storage, Is., additional Is. per Aveek. Tho secretary of tho National Dairy Association (Mr. J. G. Harkness) waited on tho board and proposed a number of changes in tho rates set out in the new by-law.
Tho chairman said that he had ■ already conferred with Mr. Harkness, and ho suggested that tho following amended charges should bo made, in-, stead of those proposed in tho by-law: (a) 35., instead of 3s. 6d. ;"(b) 2a., instead of 35.; (c) Is. 6d., instead oi Is. 9d. Fourteen' days should also be allowed instead of ten, as proposed. Tho chairman said that the store was tho most up to date in tho Dominion, and thoy hoped _ that shortly it would bo equipped with machinery which would enable them to handle butter as well as choese. If the charges he suggested were adopted, the port would be the cheapest in tho Dominion ill this respect. •
Mr. M'Farlane seconded the chair-; man's amendments, and expressed his hearty support of them. The cheese store, ho said, was going to be a big •thing in tho. future, and they wanted to get as much cheese passed through it as possible. Tho amendments were adopted, and the .by-law, as amended, was agreed to. Tho new by-law. will come into force on October 1.
The transfer of the lease of the Terry Wharf offices from the Wellington Harbour Ferries, Ltd., to the Eastbourne Borough Council was agreed to. The resolutions arrived at at tho emergency meetings'of tho board, with regard to the labour difficulties in connection with tho working and landing of the salvaged crew of the Devon, were confirmed. Tho bank pass-books showed tho following amounts to credit: —Current account, £32,189 17s. lid. ; ■ imprest account, £1142 13s. 9d.; on fixed deposit, £80,000. Payments for the month were: Accounts and wages, £13,364 10s. 10d.; progress pnvittcnts on contracts, £3068 ss. od.; salaries for September, £841 i 14s. 2d,.
The Admiralty has decided to sell out of the Navy, as unfit for further service the Britannia, which for so many years did dutv as a training-ship ofr naval cadets at Dartmouth. Other respels to be disposed of aro the destroyers Handy, Janus, and Zebra, the coastguard cruiser Colleen, the light cruiser Barham, and the. dispatch vessel Alacrity.
A remarkable operation was performed in London by Dr. F. H. Albee, of New York. In llie presence of surgeons from all countries ho cut out a pieco of the shinbono of <i cliild of four, with the aid of an electric circular saw, and inserted the piece of bono in the child's spine, which had been attacked by tuberculosis.
