EUCALYPTS.
CULTIVATION IN BRAZIL.
Eucalyptus plantations have been established in South Brazil, where the treos thrive exceedingly well. Tho Government of tho country desires to extend these plantations, and to experiment with now species, and tho chief of tho forest service in Sao Paulo, 1 Senlior Navarro do Andrade, who recently came to Sydney to interview Mr. Maiden, who is regarded as tho first authority on the eucalypti Senhor Andrado said that about 83 species of eucalypti were already grown in Brazil, but thero were about 250 species ill all, and tho Government was anxious to introduce some new varieties. The cucalypts grown included tho n'hito, red, and grey gums, and the white box. Tho Government liad promoted their cultivation because of tlieii rapid growth, and their suitability foi railway sleepers, mid for the. purpose" of fuel for tho railway locomotives, tlw trains there being run mostly on wood fuel. Tho trees wero first' introduces into Brazil about .25 years ago, but their systematic culture was not undertaken till 10 years ago.
