THE WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION,

ANNUAL MEETING

The eighteenth annual meeting of tho Wellington Industrial Association was

held in the Association's, Hall, Victoria Street, last evening, Mr. L. R. Partridge presiding. ' Others present- wore Messrs. W. Cable, D. Robertson, C. Palliser, It. llardie Shaw, E. Bull, W. .J. Thompson,- C. B. Norwood, I<\ Crease, T. Ballinger, F. Read, W. M'Lay, l'\ Rouse, l'\ Evans, A. Ross, 11. Seaton, and Mr. 11. I l '. Allen (secrotary). Letters were received from tho Auckland and Christehurch Associations stating their intention of being represented at tho New Zealand Industrial Corporation's Conference, to bo held in Wellington next month. Tho secretary stated that tho date, of the conference

had not yet been arranged, as they hada request from tho New Zealand Employers' Association to hold tho mtitter of 'the date in abeyance pending the fixing of tho dato for its (tho Employers' Association's) Conference. Many of tho delegates would bo attending both conferences.

Tho annual report (published elsewhere) was adopted on tho motion of Mr. David" Robertson, who recommended that copies should bo forwarded to each member of Parliament. The speaker went on to say that manufac- r turers in New Zealand had now to .com-1 peto with Tom, Dick, and Harry from' Japan to Peru, and if it wero not for' the local engineering firms ho did not know where they would be. (Laughter.) He believed in Mr. Massey. He had a great reputation for square deals, and ho thought that, in framing the laws of the country, they (tho • manufacturers) should bo given a fair chance. The secretary stated that it had been his custom to send copies of tho annual reports of tho association to tho members of both Houses, and also to the High Commissioner's Office at Homo. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mt. C. B. Norwood ; • vice-presidents, Messrs. S. S. Williams and F. Evans; general committee, Messrs. T. Ballinger, A. Blanton,' E. Bull, W. Cable, W. Crabtree, P. C. Crease, R. G. Denton, J. P. Luke, M. s Mantlieli W. M'Lay, G. M'Arthur, A". W. Newton, G. Norton, C. Palliser, A. Ross, H. Seaton, J. Smith, P. Read, D. Robertson, W. J. Thompson, L. T. Watkims, L. R. Partridge, S. Campbell, and tho president of the Builders' Association; treasurer, Mr. Hardio Shaw; auditors, Messrs. A. T. Clarke and A. S. Biss.

L0553s and Cains. The resignations of Mr. A. D. Riley, Whitcombo and Tombs, aiid the Frimlev Canning Company were accepted with regret. Now members were elected ns follow: —Messrs. C. Palliser and S. Ross, Paparoa Coal Co., Empiro Box Co., and the Empire Paoking Co. , Presidential Remarks. In vacating the chair in favour of Sir. Norwood, tho retiring president (Mr. Partridge) thanked tho committee for the encouragement and help which they had extended to hini during his two yens of office. . Tho association, like all other associations, had its lips ,and downs, btiti it iliad lived through the stress of times and now, had a bright future before it. At times thoro had been a lack of interest in its proceedings, but that drawback occurred with other associations of more importance than theirs, and thev had managed to keep alive. He hoped that, by this time twelve months, tho association would see the position clearly established as to their interest ill the building in .which they were meeting. It had been'erected' partly by funds supplied by tho association out of exhibition profits. If the Technical School obtained another site lie hoped that tho association would iu equity receive somo compensation. Mr. D. Robertson moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring president-, which was carried by acclamation. The president' (Mr. Norwood) remarked that ho was inexperienced in presidential duties. H'e, however, sawmany present who had had a great deal of experience, and ho would look to them for advico and help. Ho believed that tho\ association could bo made, a very important body from pn industrial point of viow. Ho hoped that all present would attend the next meeting and give the association a good send-off for the year. (Applause.) It was decided to hold the meo|mg reforred to on October 14, and thenceforward to hold meetings on the second Tuesday in each mouth. '
