NONCHALANT CONDUCTOR.
ON KARORI ROUTE. Tram conductors, who refuse to collect fares, aro not bften met with. Recently, however, a conductor, who commenced duty on a Karori-bound car about three o'clock in the afternoon, is alleged to have collected no fares between tho Government Buildings and Karori: Ono passenger, on alighting, insisted on foroing some money and a concession coupon upon tho conductor. The latter placcd the money in his bag, and, without "punching" tho coupon, sot tho car going again. Tho owner of the coupon ran'after the tram demanding his property. This was evidently too much for tho conductor, for (so the story runs) he cast a contemptuous look at the passenger, raised the coupon high in tho air, and then cast it to the winds as so much rubbish. Eventually the owner of the coupon recovered his property in ono of tho byroads.
The matter was brought up at last night's meeting of tho Karori Borough Council, and the Town Clerk then reported that the conductor had been'relieved of duty on tho return trip from Karori, and subsequently dealt with by tho Tramway Board. "Was tho man drunk?" asked a councillor.
"I could not say." replied the Town Clerk, "because I did not see tlio man myself." ■
