HUTT COUNCIL.

question of new offices.

The Mutt Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. IC. I'. Bunny) presiding. Councillors liobbs, Hall, Phyphers, Parsonage, Clendon. Kenipthorne, Mcldrum, Hodgins, and Dawson were also present. An item in tlio works committee's report dealing with the presentoflices occupied by tlie council was discussed .1t sonic length. Tlio report recommended tlie council to submit an offer to lease the' present offices for' a ■ further term of live or seven years at an annual rental of £100. Councillor Dawson stated that it was about time that the council wont into the question of acquiring its own offices. Ho pointed out that tlie council had property of its own opposite to its present offices, upon which the corporation's now buildings could bo erected. lie suggested that 1 the council should borrow £3000 from the Government at u per cent., and build its own offices. Councillor Clendon said that it would be to the council's advantage to havo its own ofiices, and Councillor J3all also expressed approval of Councillor Dawson's statement. It was decided to ask the Hutt River Beard's opinion on tlio matter before proceeding further. A deputation consisting of members of the Hutt Bowling Club asked that a road bo formed from tho main road to the bowling green, for the purposo of providing better access to tho green. The Mayor informed tho deputation that tho council would consider tho matter. A letter was received from tho Health Inspector of tho Hospital Board notifying the council of two eases of chicken pox in tho borough; and that the usual precautions had been taken. —Received. Tho council acknowledged receipt of a cheque for £3 3s. 9d. from the secretary of the Hutt Fire Brigade, being a donation to tho motor vehiele fund. The engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) reported that tho work of minimising tho existing danger at the railway crossing, situated at the end of Parliament Street, was proceeding, and would be concludcd at tho end of tho present week. Tho report also dealt with tho progress of various works, and stated that tho total number of water connections to date was 943. House sowerago connection permits totalled SOo to date. Tho report was adopted. A letter was received from tlio Railway Department notifying that an additional light had been erected at the north end of the railway station platform.- —Received. It was resolved, on tho recommendation of tho works committee, to dcclino tho application of tho River I3oard for a right-of-way through tho council's gasworks site. . Regarding tho application of the Knox Church for a license to uso 1 a certain building in the borough, it was decided to adopt tlio recommendation of the works committee, viz., that tho license bo granted on condition that certain improvements were ofl'ected to tho building inasmuch as they affect the exits. '
