LAW AND INSURANCE. The annual Riugby ' football match, Law v. Insurance, took place at Newtown Park yesterday afternoon. Insurance kicked off against tho wind, and soon had the Law on tho defensive, and from a scramble Pool got over. Tho Insurance men came again-; and somebody got over, and this try was con-i verted. This, howover, was too much for tho legal brigade, and Robisoli scored for them. Pool scored shortly afterwards. After half-time Insurarico again scored, but Robison once more got going for tho Law, and succeeded m putting on a try. Tho gamo_ ended in favour of Insuranco by. 14 points to 6. For the winners, Pool, M'Leod; Millar, and Healy played well, while for the Law, O'Shea was tho mainstay of his 1 side, but was well seconded by Robison and Ryan. Mr. C. Roskrugo was. referee. '.
The annual dinner of members of the Law and Insurance avocations was held at Godber's Rooms, ' Courtonay Place, in the evening. Mr. A. W. Blair presided. The toasts included tho following:—"The Law Profession," proposed by Mr. A. J. Blair (Victoria Insuranco Company), responded to by Mr. T. O'Shea; "Tho Insurance Profession," proposed by Mr. A. W. Blair, responded to by Mr. R. Pownnll; "Tho Football Teams" (who met in the afternoon), proposed by Mr. 0. Stout, responded to by Messrs. Akers and Aeltins (tTie captains).; "Tho Ladies," proposed by Mr. Stace, responded to by Mr. Smythe. Items of entertainment were contributed by Messrs. A. G. Cunningham, J. Craig, Rankin, and others. The committee who arranged tho dinner wero Messrs. Stevenson (chairman), Aekins (secretary), O'Shea, Glcdhill, Brec, and Nor■ris.
THE BANKS AT PLAY.' The annual Rugb.v match botween the Bank of New Zealand and the other banks was played on Athletic Park yesterday afternoon. About 600 people witnessed tho game, which was won by the combined team by 20 points to 6. There was a good'proportion of regular players in each team, and tho yamo was lively. The Bank of Now Zealand team left tho field with a deficit of six points at half-time, and at tho end of tho contest wero considerably on tho wrong sido of tho ledgor. In the opening half Schofield and M'Gregor landed penalty goals for tho combined team, and in tho snconcl half this score waa increased by a converted try by
Dewhurst. and tries by Shelley, Grant, and Bodclinrfon. Tho six points obtained by the losers consisted of tries by Gardiner and Taylor.
