DOMINION DAY.
HOLIDAY QUIETLY OBSERVED,
The celebration of Dominion Day, bo far aq Wellington was concerucd, was unmarked by any piirado, military or otherwise. It was merely a half-and-half holiday, Government offices, banks, corporation oflices, the courts, and soino privat-o firms observing it. Tiio flags 011 tho Govorninont and municipal buildings alone indicated tho nature of tho day. A number of lionso football matclies wore played during tlio afternoon, and a number visited tho various holiday resorts. Tho tram traffic was not lioavy, and in fact was hardly more than normal. A fair number of lioliday makers fiournoyed acrosa to tho bays in tho lorry steamers, .but here again thoro was no heavy rush. Tho first day of tho Otaki raoes proved tho greatest attraction outside tiio city. T.vo cxcursibn trains from Wellington carried 800 pcoplo to Otaki, and 500 wont from I'almerston North. The various theatres and picture shows were well patronised in tiio evening.
