PRICE OF A RAILWAY CHIEF. ,Mr. Elliott's career "from clerk to railway president" reached its zenith when lio was appointed two days ago at a salary of £30,000 a year to succeed Mr. Charles Mellon as president of tho late Mr. Piorpont Morgan's favourite enterprise, the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railway. Mr. Elliott lias been receiving £15,000 a year ever since 110 became president of the Northern Pacific Railway. Shortly beforo the death of Mr. Morgan he was offered a salary of £20,000 a year to transfer his sorvices to a rival system, but on the advice of tho great banker, who was reserving him for larger tasks, lie refused tho offer. The intentions of Mr. Morgan have now been carried oxecution by the board of-directors.

Mr. Charles M. Schwab has received £100,0)10 a year as manager, of the Carnegio Steel Trust. It has been stated by Mr. Brisbane, the eminent American journalist, that the value of a man half as ablo as-the late Mr. Joseph Pulitzer, proprietor of the "New York World," would be. £30,000. a year to qno newspaper and £50.000 a year to two nowspapers. The salary and fees received by Sir Rufus Isaacs as'Attor-tiey-General last financial year- were £16.764. Tlio salary of tho Archbishop of Canterbury is £15,000 a year.
