Inquiries from headquarters concerning tho statement in the "Sydney Shipping List" that the Union Company intended calling for tenders shortly for two passenger steamers for the Pacific trade, elicited the information that tenders for steamers wcro being called, but for what trade-is not being disclosed at present. MOANA FROM 'FRISCO. Tho Union Company's Moana, which left San Francisco for Wellington, via way ports, on. tho afternoon of Wednesday, September 17, has 45 passengers on board for .Wellington and 50 for Sydney. She has 650 tons of general cargo to land at this port, 350 tone of which will bo transhipped to other New Zealand ports. Included in tho latter is 10,000 feet of lumber. The steamer is duo at Wellington on October 9. THE TWICKENHAM. An arrival at Wellington yesterday morning was the big steamer Twickenham, whioh is making her first visit to New Zealand porta. ' Tho vessel came from Bunbury and Fremantle, with a full cargo of hardwood, for delivery at Auckland, Wellington! and the Bluff. Tho Twickenham has just completed a voyage round tho world. Before coming out to Australia on the present trip she loaded ooal at Cardiff for tho River Plato, subsequently proceeding to Oallao and then to Peruvian] ports, where she loaded sugar for Vancouver. From Yancouvor she went to Portland (Oregon) and loaded flour for Japan. From Japan she took coal to Singapore. She next proceeded to Java, where a cargo of sugar wag lifted for AdclAido and Melbourno. From Melbourne the vessel went to Newcastle for bunker coal, proceeding thence to Bunbury'.and Fremantle. At the latter port sho loaded her present cargo. Tho Twickenham, which can carry a cargo of 8100 tons dead-weight, has steamed a total distance of over 34,900 sea miles since leaving Cardiff. When the ship lias finished putting out hardwood here sliowlll go to the Bluff to complete. She is afterwards to lift phosphates at Makatea Island for Melbourne. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP.. Mr. 0. E. Crisp signed on tho Maitai as extra officer at Wellington yesterday. Mr. M. Mills, late of the Westport office Vf tho Union Company, has joined the Maiti as assistant purser. Mr. E. Protheroe has joined the Maitai as fifth engineer. Mr. J. M'Lean, late second officer of the Monowai, joins tho Apariina as second, relieving Mr. Williamson, who has come ashore on leave. <

Mr. E. F.. Watson has returned from "holiday leave, and has rejoined the Waipori as chief officer, relieving' Mr. Bruce, who came ashore' for instructions.

Oaptahi B. M. Aldwoll, master of tho Wahine, who is at present on leave, arrived in Wellington from south by tho Mararoa last evening.

Mr. W. Allsop, who was second engineer of Messrs. Richardson and Company's steamer Toroa about 12 years ago, is now chief engineer of tho.Watts, Watte steamer Twickenham, which is at present in Wellington.

Mr. 6. Garwood, who was well known as a purser on the Union Company's intercolonial steamers, is now with the Burns, Phillip Lino at Singapore.

The Tyser Company's WhaltaTua Is dm® at Wellington from London, via intermediate ports, on. October 5.

It is likely that tho Union Company's Island steamer Navua will bring her own fruit (as well as the Talune's from tho South Pacific Islands) to Wellington. It was originally intended that this cargo should come south by the Monowai, leaving Auckland to-day. Tho Navua is expected here on Thursday, and will afterwards go to Westport.

Overhaul on the Union Company's Kittawa will probably bo completed in timo to enable tho vessel to leave/ Wellington for Greymouth on Thursday.

Tho Kamo will be dispatched from Wei lington. for Lyttelton to-day.

Having got out tho Wellington, portion of her Liverpool cargo tho F. and 8. Line's Tyrone left for tho south last evcninc.

Tho Arahura arrived at Greymouth from Wellington, via ports, at 10 a.m. yesterday. She was to have left on the return trip at 11 p.m.

Messrs. Johnston and Co. adviso that the steamer Moa left New Plymouth for Wellington yesterday afternoon. Sho loads case oil. ex Cape Breton, for Wanganui, and sails hence to-morrow evening.
