BANDS ASSOCIATION.

"OWN SELECTION" PROPOSAL.

(From Out Special Correspondents.) Palmorston N., September 20. Tho executive of the North Island Brass Bands' Association, at a meeting hero last night, discussed the approaching contest at the Auckland Exhibition. Mr. E. R. Holben said that in reply to circulars sent out to brass bawls in New Zealand, asking for an opinion concerning the marching competition, 38 bands expressed themselves for an "own choice selection," and four against it. Sir, Cohen remarked that it was easier than working up a test piece. Sergeant-Major. Anderson Baid that in spite of tho replies to the circulars, lie / was opposed to an "own choice selection." It was not fair to judge the competition on that basis. It would bp liko judging two horses —one running on the track, and tho other on the plough. ... Major Dunk concurred, and said to yield to the bands' wishes now would necessitate yielding again in future. Mr. Holben said that as the bands desired to contest in that way, theirs was tho onus. It was difficult nowadays to get bands to compete. Mr. L. Cohen said that the rules could bo altered, permitting it, if notice were given, but he was personally opposed to the "own choice selection." The voting on the question was equal, and the own-selection proposal was defeated by tho chairman's casting vote. The Auckland Exhibition authorities submitted a list of judgos as follows Test selection and quick-step, Captain Bentley, Sydney; solos, trios, and quartets, Herr Wieteart and J. Crichton. A letter was read from Lieutenant Herd, Wellington, objecting to the nomination of judges coming from the Auckland authorities. Major Dunk and Lieutenant Pringle proposed that Captain Bentley be appointed, and after an amendment by Mr. Muir, in favour of Mr. Sutton (who is judging at Ballarat) had been defeated, Captain Bentley was appointed on a. ballot by five votes to four.
