Saunders won tho Manawatu golf championship, defeating Kurupo in tho final on Friday afternoon. lie has been three times runner-up, but this is his first championship- hero. Kurupo has been champion three times. Tho projected inauguration of a motor seivice between l'ulmerston and Foxton is rumoured. Tho proceedings at the farewell to he tendered by local sports to Dr. O'Brien will consist of a boxing tournament, supper, and presentation. The watu Boxing Association, Racing Club, Hunt Club, Trotting Club, ana Caledonian Society will take part.
NAPIER. The Napier Borough Council recently decided to have only eight cubic feet of rubbish per week carted away from business premises, and to make a small charge for destroying everything over and above that. The firms consider this arrangement unsatisfactory, and a deputation . will wait on the council, asking for the regulations to be amended. . . Customs roveiffte collected in Napier 'last week amounted to £2038 16s. Bd. In a Rugby football match on (Saturday Tun Dominion runners defeated tho "Daily Telegraph" .runners by 9 points to 6. Clarkson, of Wellington, is appearing as Don Jose. _ At the annual meeting of Bluff Hill Bowling Club, held on Saturday evening, Mr. Walter M'Carth.v was elected president, and Mr. W. C. Proule vicepresident. It was decided to open tho season on October 18.
WANGANUI. A company has just been formed in Wangamii for the purpose of working sovoral sluicing claims in tlio Karamea district. A public meeting is to bo "field 011 Monday evening for the purpose of making. arrangements to give a fitting wetcome to' liis x Excellency the Governor, 011 the occasion of his first, official visit to Wanganui, which takes place during the middle of next month. • The genial spring weather which has prevailed of late caused the knwhai trees to break into a remarkablo burst of bloom, and the hillsides lining the river now form a glorious sigiit.
MASTERTON. Several Territorials appeared before Mr. L. G. Iteid, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court 011 Saturday, and were fined in various amounts fqr breaches of tho Defence Act. The lion. C. M. Luke, of Wellington, assisted in the celebration of homo mission services at the local Methodist Church on Sunday. Over forty entries have been received for the North Wairarapa Rifle Association's annual meeting,- which opens at I'airview range on Thursday. Tho statement filed in the estate of Charles Grubb Colville, bootmaker, of Groytown, shows a net oi £51 ss. Id. . . The Wairarapa Caledonian Society held a successful social -gathering in the Town Hall last week, Mr. J. 11. M'Kenzie presiding. Mr. It. Conper, of Gladstone, has received an order for a line of 100 Lincoln rams, for Bhipment to another country. Mr. William M'Kenzie, of Masterton, is supplying a similar order. ■ Mr. D. Nebenton, secretary of the Lincoln Sheepbreeders' Association! lias received applications from a number of breeders to have tlieir flocks registered in the Lincoln Stud-book. Tlio flocks registered to dato number 125. Mr. Charles Ibbetson, who has received ail appointment with a Napier firm, was tendered a farewell "social" by members of Knox Church.
CARTERTON. The weather is ideal summer. Opossums in the Wairarapa are not a common occurrence/ but one of these little strangers was seen at Carrington the other day. Th.e annual horse parade under tlio auspices of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society was held 011 the showgrounds 011 Saturday afternoon 111 beautiful weather. There was a good number of entries, and an interested attendanco of farmers. The Wairarapa Ladies Hockey team, which returned home on Saturday, put up a very fine record at tho Wanganui tournament. They won all their matches, ■ scored forty goals, and only hnd two goals scored , against them. The Izard Cup, which was won by t'hem on Thursday at Wanganui, has been competed for at three previous tournaments. In 1910 Hawke's Bay were successful in winning the cup at Wollington; Nelson won the trophy tho vear following 011 their own grounds; last year at Christchurch after a strenuous contest Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa tied for the coveted trophy. ' The team was selected from only two clubs —Kin I'oa (Groytown), and_ Kiwi (Dalofield). The bachelors of Dalefield have decided to bold a ball 011 October 9. The annual concert of the Belvedere State School was held on Friday evening, when there was a very good attendance. A capital programme rendered by district talent was provided and greatly appreciated. A dance was held, subsequently, Mr. W. Haydon supplying tho music, and Mr. C. J. De Lacey acting as M.C. .
