IN THE LOCKED BEDROOM. 'AN INTERVIEW WITH LOADED REVOLVERS.
(Reo. September 21, 5.5 p.m.)
London, September 20. Quadratstein, cross-examined at tho trial, said he had known Gumwirth, the Austrian dealer, for five months. He secured his confidence in connection with the necklace by pretending he had sold, for Quadratstein, stolen property previously. Quadratstein denied that his first intention was to buy the nccklaco, and that when he saw tho pearls he concluded it would bo too difficult to negotiate them, and decided it would be safer to earn the reward. When they interviewed tho prisoners in the locked bedroom Quadratstein and.Brandstatter carried loaded revolvers. /They did not know if Grizzard and Silverman were n.rmed. They did not hold the men up in the bedroom, but afterwards regretted that they allowed the necklace to go to Brussels.
