THE BARE MAJORITY.

Sir,—"T.P. V* letter, dated September 17, oil the bare majority is rather interesting. May I offer a word or two on the subject? I should like to tell "T.P." that it is quite possible for one to be "a genuino and sincere Democrat" and still object to the question being tattled by a bare majority. As one who has had a great deal ,to do with back-blocks settlement, I can. inform "T.P." tiiat vast numbers of cottiers keep a bottle of spirits in their houses for medical purposes only. Men know (the possibilities. of serious accidents, where it might be bil extremely difficult matter to keep life in the sufferer .until a doctor can be obtained. Women find that they imvo usually to be the doctor' for ■ the household and. the spirits are kept as an aid if required. Now,' I deny the right of a bare majority, or even a three-fifths majority, to take from settlers the right to keep spirits for\ such purposes. I would .-point out that prohibition will do so, and that it is hard that people who have faint conception of -the trials and dangers of back-blocks settlers , should have the light to add to tho 'difficulties in even the slightest degree.—l a in, etc.. , JIANGAWEKA.
