THE CHARITY CUP FINAL,
CAPITAL DAME. THE TROPHY WON BY HOSPITAL. One of tho finest bouts that has been seen'on tho "Soccer" field this season was that between Hospital and Y.M:C.A. at ICelburno Park on Saturday. Over COO people flocked tlio bank anil sidewalk overlooking the ground. Hospital took tlio field ill full strength, but Y.M.C.A. Nero- less fortunate. Carrutlwrs and Whittingion, right wing and centre-forward respectively, wore unable to plnv owing to illhealth, and thus they lost two of their most valued men. Ileid, an Otago re-prosentat-ivc, was one of tlie substitutes, but the loss was .irreparably at such sliort notice. At the iinal whistle neitfhor side had scored, atid the referee, nt the request of tho men, interviewed the chairman of the W.F.A. (Mr. J. I). Paton) who was present, and received permission to play an extra ten minutes each way.
■ Within a few minutes of tlio kick-off Hospital secured a corner and .Elliott took the kick. Ho centred with good judgment, and his centre-forward booted °tho ball goalwards. Hollis saved with a swing of his arm that sent tho ball well up tho flold. faker cot tho
ball, and dribbled well into Hospital territory 'but Cross was too much for him, and put the boot in before Baker could clear. Again Baker camo up, this tinio in company with Foote, and together' they secured a corner. A strong attempt to forco tho ball between tho posts followed, but it came out, and Cross kicked it into safety over tho line. From the throw in Slmnd got away and raced for Hollis and victory. But Coad, slender but determined, stopped the onslaught, and neatly passed out to Reid.' Reid was soon robbed, however, and Hospital's insido right kicked straight and truo for goal. A silence that could bo felt took possession of the crowd as it watched tho speeding of the ball and tho figure in wliito between the posts. Could anything possiblo stop that hall? The tension was over in a flash. Hollis's foot swung back, then forward—and the ball was mixed up in tho scrum of some Rugby match on tho adjoining area. The ensuing play was nothing short of brilliant. In tho twin!lling of an eye a determined attack, with tho defenco apparently on its last legs, would bo turnod into a rout with tho defenders becoming the attackors and sweeping me.i and leathor well down tho field. Both toams must have been grained to the hair to play as they did. Cobb, Hospital's -'keeper, was called.upon to save only once in the first spoil. Tho second spell saw both teams at it hammer and tongs. Reid received a nasty kick in tho ankle, but recovered and was presently seen in some rather tricky footwork. Roats came to the fore in this round, and eventually passed out to Skinner (Hospital's inside left), who, combining with Elliott on the wing, made a fine dash up tlio field, and then oentred to Hughes. Hughes lost control and Coad, with a beautifully timed kick, passed out to Gowan oil the far wing, who in turn centred to Brett. A dribbling rush followed, but Roots intercepted, kicked to Daly who, tricking past Phillips and Gowan, opened up to Hughes. By the set, determined rush that followed it was evident Hospital intended to make no mistake this time. They did r.ot. With tho ball undor full control Hugjhes and iiis forwards swept up the field, the ball being passod first this sido and then that. Within a few yards of tho posts Hughes let drive for tho top of the bar. It was through I No. Hollis roso in the air, his fingers tipped the ball—and Hospital saw the mirage of the Cup fade. A fow minutes later Hollis was again called on to save. Ho came out of the goal, drop-kicked tho ball, was charged irom behind, and hurt. He remained on tho field, however, but his race was run. Tho final whistle blow with tho score-sheet still a blank, but it was decided to play another ten. minutes each way. Notwithstanding tho fast, arduouß gamo that had already been played, neither side showed any apparent effects, and played as never before. Roberts got away, but was intercepted by Wallace, Hospital's left back. He fed tho forwards with tho ball, and they worked down tho field a little. Foote stopped them, but ho in turn was stopped by Cross. Again the Hospital forwards worked further dowii. Again they wero intercepted, this time Coad booting tlio leather hack. Shand, the right' lialf, received and passed to Roots. Tho ball was returned to the forwards. Daly on the right wing got tho ball and passed to Heath. Heath took a flying shot for tho left hand corner of the goal, the ball flow home—and the game was won. Y.M.C.A., for the remainder of t)he game, attacked grimly, but that' goal finished tho game. Tho score, therefore, whb Hospital 1, Y.M.O.A. nil. Mr. Lithgow was referee. JUNIOR. CHARITY SEMI-FINAL. Kaiwarra defeated Railway by 3 goals to nil.. Pressmen at Play. After a lapso of some years, a game of "soccor" was played between representatives of the staffs of The Dominion and "Evening Post" at Wakefield' Park on Saturday afternoon. Tho "Post" men. won by 5 goals to 2, after an interesting game. During the first spell, >The Dominion made tho pace, and, after aibout ten minutes' play, they wero rowarded with a score. By a concerted forward rush, in which the half lino was seen to advantage, tho ball was taken well down tho field against strenuous opposition l from tho "Post." There was a sora.mble in front of goal, but King landed the leather in the net. "Post" now made a determined attack, and headed by Riley they invaded The Dominion territory. A score looked, imminent, but Riley ltioked behind. Soon after this Marsden had a shot at goal. It was a hot one, but Reynolds managed to save, and play was transferred to the opposite end. Dominion then commenced an attack, and after combined' play M'lntyre (centre-half) scored. Tlic second spell was all m favour of "Tho Post." Their first score oarne from tho boot < of Riley. The Dominion 'keeper had little chance to savo. Tho next goal came from a free-kick which Riley put through without much trouble.
