The proposed disestablishment of the Petoue District High School and the , inaaiguration of a day school in its stoad was spoken against veiy strongly- by Mr. D. M'Kenzie, chairman _of tho High, School Committee, at this week's meeting of tho committee. Mr. M'Kenzie moved as follows; —"That tho Wellington Education Board l endeavour to > seouro by combined efforts the establishment of a properly equipped and fully staffed secondary collego, to be near a railway stopping place, centrally situated, and with ample ground space for recreation and school garden purposes, thus securing higher education, both technical and secondary, for tho whole of tho valley." Tho motion was carried. Mr. M'Kenzie stated that tlio householders of tho district were behind tho committee, and they were decidedly against the disestablishment of tho High School unless there was something- very superior installed in its place. The monthly competition of the Hutt Valley Gun Club was held-at Taita yesterday. Two events of 21 and 15 clay birds were, held, the competition being for trophies presented by Messrs. Gadsby and-Williams. A. Scott secured a "leg in" for the former, and won the latter outright. The following were the leading scores in the two events:—Mr. Gadsby's trophy, 21 birds —A. Scott, 21 out of 21, lCyds.: J.«Brasell, 15 out of 21, 13yds.; W. Kilmister, 16 out of _21, lOyds. Mr. Williams's trophy, 15 birds —A Scott, 17yds., 13 out of 15; S. Edwards, 16yds., 11 out of 15; J. Brasell, 13yds., 12 out of 15. ' A reunion of the Petone Ex-Navals' Association was held last evening. Mr. R. Mothes presided. It was intimated that it was intended to oppose .tho State's proposal to take over the Petono Drill Hall imdor the provisions of the Defence Act. The Petono Rifle Club commenced practico yesterday afternoon at the Waiwetu range. A match against the club's veterans will be fired nost Saturday. The following team will represent tho club:—W. Ballinger, W. J. M'llvrido, J. Carter, C. Morris, A. Selwood, P. Glennie, H. Ayson, G. Clout, H. Russell, and J. M'Laughlin. At the Petono Working Men's Club last evening, tho recommendations of tho Conference of Clubs were discussed. About 120 were present, and on the motion of the President (Mr. R. Cunliffe), seconded by Mr. W. Forsyth, it was decided: "That the club ratifies the recommendations of the conference, and agrees to become integral part or tho proposed federation." A vote of thanks was accorded tho delegates who represented the club at the conference.
