A BETTER SERVICE.

. "What'- doe's -the Government intend to do in regard to the Wanganui River steamer service?" was a question asked in tho House of Representatives last evening by Mr. W. A. Veitch, M.P., when the Lands Department Estimates were being considered. He said that a decision should be come :to without delay, as the present, contract would fall in in eighteen months or two years hence. If the Government intended to equip a -service in the interests of the Bottlers it would liavo to act with speed. The Prime Minister said that he was not able to' speak positively at the present moment about tho river service, because the present contract -had two or three years to run, and it was too early yet for the Government to do anything in Qonnection with the continua-tion.-of the service: The-railway that was ibeirig built between Stratford and Ongaruo would ultimately take over a good deal of the business- now done by the river steamers. Settlers who used tho service htid informed him that a considerable -improvement had followed upon the inquiry conducted recently by a Commission. .. . , .
