According to the Gisbome district engineer (Mr C. E. Armstrong), who hag just paid a. visit of inspection to the road' works beyond Motu, there is everyprospect of the Motuj-Opotiki Road being available for vehicular traffic dur-. ing the coming summer. About 100 men are still employed on widening operations, and good progress is being made, although 7iumerous slips have occurred.
The Variance returned to Dunodin last week from'the West Coast Sounds after a sealing cruise extending over two mouths. The expedition had poor luck and some trying experiences, one party being., straaideu for a' ■ week at ■Dusky without provisions, : .having to: subsist on seal moat, manuka tea, and' anything olso they could lay their hands'' upon. They were forestalled at their main rookery, and bad luck was their portion throughout, only some CO skins being obtained, They returned satisfied that it would have to be a much more successful expedition to make such a cruise pay. Another vessel, , the > Antelope, sent out "by the same - - firm, also got 16Q skins. -Thfe'value of ' the lot may be.'plut at'about £120, which" is stated to little after defraying expenses.
