Auckland, September 18. 11l connection with the trouble with the store hands who demanded an extra 6d. per hour for handling the oil cargo from the steamer Capo Breton it appears there are still 7000 cases of oil to be lauded. It having been ascertained that the Vacuum Company's Wellington branch could store an additional quantity the steamer sailed this morning for the south. "NO REASON TO COMPLAIN." Tlmaru, September 17. The Supremo Court was occupied yesterday afternoon and for a large part of to-day over an appeal from a magistrate's order for payment in an affiliation case. . The judgment upheld the order. Judge Denniston said if a mail, as appellant had done, admitted that lie 'had walked out- with the girl, kissed her, put his arm round her, and there . was no suggestion of "ally;'other man, he had no reason to complain if blamed.

Mr. Justico Cooper, deciding tho appeal of Corry and Company, Blenheim, v. H. S. Liddel, Gisborne, in respoct to a contract for supply of chaff, varied the magistrate's judgment by reducing the' amount awarded for damages from £140 to £06. AN ART PURCHASE. Auckland, September 18. The City Council has authorised the Mayor to purchase Van Der Valden's painting '.'Otira Gorge" for tho Auckland Art Gallery at a price of 120 guineas. The Society of Arts has contributed £50 towards the purchase price. WARKWORTH BTRIICE. Auckland, Septomher 18. Matters are still unchanged' as far as tho Warkworth strike is concerned. No work is being dono at tho cement works, and neither side seems desirous of moving in the direction of ending the deadlock. The watersido workers in Auckland have decided to ; handle no cement of any kind until the company and employees have come to an agreement, and when the Makurangi arrived from \\ arkworth with a cargo ofcement which was loaded at the works by the company's officials a little bandinage ensued between tho men on the wharf and the company's Auckland employees, totaling serious, however, occurred, and the work of unloading was carried on by the company's men. . At a meeting of tho council''of tho Canterbury Society of Arts' held last night the following resolution was: arrived at:—"That tho council of the Canterbury Art Society desires to 'outer its protest against that portion of yio Science and Art Bill which deals with the creation of a Dominion Art Gallery, and considers that it is m best interests of art that the art societies in tho four centres should bo fostered and assisted by tlio Government by means of Government subsidies.
THE MATAWAI CASE. Napior, September 18. The trial of Frank Duggan, 'William O'Learv, and Angus Lamont for assault oil a married woman with intent at tlio Matawai railway camp near Gisborne on •Vugust 9 concluded m the Supremo Court this evening, when all tho prisoners were found guilty of assault and of assault with intent to commit bodily harm. Tho jury expressed the opinion that the polico protection m the Matawai district was insufficient.
