The twenty-eighth annual Metropolitan and Provincial Show of tho Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association is timed for November 5, 6, and 7. This fixture is eo well known that there is little to say beyond tho fact that it has almost assumed the functions of a national show, though it is not in any way subsidised by tho Government. The prize list displays afresh tlio progressive spirit of the committeo, and caters lor all classes. As each show conies round, something new is added to tho list of attractions, and this year is no exception. For instance, there i 9 a- competition for best gentlemen rider in the Auckland province, Several northern sportsmen expressed a desire to hav© some 6uch event tuh off at Pnlmerston. This suggestion,, made before throe judges hailing from tho Wellington province, wns at once token up, with tho result stated. Quito apart from tho benefit of the show to ths General public, it is interesting to notice to what extent tho various Government De-. nartraents .participate: for instance, tho Railway, Post ana Telegraph, Education, and Agricultural Departments. Take the Department of Education, On referring to the schedule it appears that .thero o.re something like 80 clasros, ranging from Standard 1 in our public schools to advanced pupils in art and technical schools. The benefits accruing to oilier Departments, such as Railways, Post and Telegraph, and Agricultural Departments aro of a more general nature,,but they seem to be considerable.
