The Inspector-General of Police lias recommended tlio necessity for a material increase in the numerical strength of the Police Force, owing, partly, to tile great growth in the population, and also to tho growth of certain forms of crime.

Tho report calls attention to the remarkablo decrease in tho number of liotels in the metropolitan district.- In 18S2 there was 0110 hotol to every 293 persons; now there is only 0110 to every--792., During thirty-ono years, allowing for new licenses granted, 356 liotels have been closed. Tlio Inspector-General claims that this is due to tho vigilanco of the police in bringing undesirable hotels and hotelkeepers under the notice of the Licensing Bench.
