Mr. Fred. Young, for some twenty years past connected in a responsible position with tho stage management of. J. C. Williamson companies, and for a groat many years stage manager of tho ltoyal Comic Opera Company, resigned that position in Auckland last week, and is at present on a visit to Wellington. On medical advice Mr. Young (wlio is a brother of Miss Florence Young, the popular operatic artist) has been ordered a rest. Mr. Duncan Novell, pt ono time a Not* Zealand pressman, and a well-known swimmer, has been appointed secretary to the theatrical firm of Messrs. Geo. Willoughby, Ltd., and resident manager at tho Adelphi Theatre, Sydney. ( Mr. A. C. Lawr.v, of Stratford, was, before his Honour Mr. Justice Edwards, on Tuesday admitted as a solicitor of tho Supremo Court at New Plymouth. Mr. Thomas Grcsham, whose office as city coroner at Auckland was recently abolished, arrived in Wellington yesterday to attend a meeting of tho Peti-' t-ions Committee of the House of Representatives, which will consider the protest mado by citizens of Auckland against Mr. Gresham's removal. Bishop Averill, Bishop designate of Auckland, will pay a brief visit to his new See in December, and during h's stay be will conduct an ordination servico. Tho Bishop will romain in charge of tho Waiapu dioccso until January, when ho will complete his fourth year there, and after a holiday he will take up his duties in Auckland, probably about tho middle of February. Mr. Robert M'Nab, writing from Sydnoy at tho end of August, states that owing to business inattors he was unable to continue his trip to England, and will return to New Zealand. He hopes to bo in Southland some time in October. Mr. H. H. Marshall, manager of tha Christchurch branch of tho Guardian. Assurauce Co., Ltd., has been appointed manager of the Auckland branch. He will be succeeded at Christchurch by Mr. Geo. A. Dawson, formerly in charge of the Napier branch. Mr. E. Baxter, who acted as inspector of tha company for some time, has been promoted to take charge of tho branch at Napier. _ Mr. A. L. Clements, the golf professional champion of New Zealand, arrived at Wellington from Sydney yesterday by the Manuka, and is staying at tho Now Occidental Hotel, prior to his return to Christchurch. Lieutenant-Colonel Powley, the new chief secretary of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, is now due in Australia, and is expected to arrive hero early in October. Lieutenant-Colonel Powley, together with his wifo and family, will be accorded a welcome at tho Vivian Street Citadel on Sunday, October 5. On that occasion the meetings will bo personally conduotcd by the Commissioner. In all probability all the provincial commanders will bo summoned to Wellington to meet Colonel Fisher's successor.'
Commissioner- Richards, of' the Salva« tion Army, is leaving to-morrow for Napier, en route to Gisborne, where ha will spend Saturday and Sunday. His October engagements are as follow:— October 11 and 12, Now Plymouth; October 13, Inglewood; October 14 - and .15, Stratford. Brigadiera Bray and Gist will accompany the Commissioner to Gisborne. The ltev. Father Creach was a passenger from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday. Captain and Mrs. Mace, of Oakura, •celebrated their golden-wedding on Tuesday, "■ There passed away at his farm on! tho Valley Road, Kimbolton, on Tuesday, an old resident of that district, in the person of Mr. James ICnox, at tho age of 66 years Mr. Knox, who was born in Ireland, came out to New Zealand 40 years ago,, and settled in Kimbolton, when the Birmingham' Block was originally opened up, 16 years later. Ho' loaves a family of five, four sons and one daughter, who are all living on tho farm. Dr. Leslie Thompson, who last week relinquished professional dutieß at Na-' pier Hospital, is at present spending a, few days in Feilding prior to leaving next week for England. The funeral of the late Tram Conductor Breedo.i took placo yesterday morning. Amongst chose who attended were tho Mayor (Mr. J, P. Luke), the chairman of tho Tramway Board (Mr. W. H. Morton), the tramway traffic superintendent (Mr. M. Cable), the tramway traffio manager (Mr. James), tho officers of tho .Tramway Union, and all the tramway employees who could be spared from duty. The Tramway Band (under Mr. Bowes) headed the cortege through the city, playing en route "The Garland of Flowers," "The -Dead March," and "Brief Life is Here Our Portion." The service at the graveside was conducted by Captain Home, of the Salvation Army. ,
Mr. Albert ,M. Haynes, a newspaper proprietor of Buenos Ayres, is at present visiting Wellington. He has been touring tho North island in company, with Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Grant.
