NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Bt Glencoe.l

The Manuka, which .arrived from Sydney yesterday, had on board J. Hennaii's reeent purchase, Forest Prince. The hurdle gelding is a bright bay, and a smart-looking horse. His front legs were heavily bandaged in cotton wool, but the walked off tho wharf quito sound. Ho is to bo railed to Hastings to-day, and will be given a spell until the arrival of his owner, who is expected to come across at tho conclusion of tho A.J.C. mooting next month.

Mr. J. B. Reid's colt Rinaldo, by Charlemagne II from Demeter, is among the horses left in the Hawke's Bay Guineas after final payment.

Mr. F. H. Pyno's Back Chat, by Achilles from Chinwag, therefore full sister to Historiette; lias been paid up for in the Hastings Stakes.

Prelusive, by Bezonian from Prelude, dam of Peroneal and Peronilla, will probably carry tho Stead colours in tho Hastings Stakes.

H. C'utts and M. Hobbs are expected hero from Riccarton on Saturday next on their way to Wanganui. Tho former is bringing the untried Stevedore, who will carry Sir George Clifford's colours in the Wanganui Guineas. Hobbs will bring Mowbray and Rinaldo, who are to represent Mr. J. B. Reid.

. Excavator, who scored in the Maiden at Avondale yesterday, is a member of M. Ryan's team at Ellerslie. King Lupin, tho runner-up, is trained by R. Hanuon.

It is thought that at last a cure has been discovered for horses that aro subject to breaking blood-vessels. Mr. Frank Cundell, of Swindon, has (writes Liondon "Sporting Lifo") successfully treated a liumbor of horses, and has 'yet to experience a single failure. Red Star and tho Cinder filly, two recent winners in England, have both been under his caro. Lord Villiers, tho owner of Red Star, is highly delighted with tho way in which 1113 horse has been cured of his weakness. Unfortunately, no particulars are available' as to tho nature of the euro.

ft will be pleasing to sportsmen throughout the Dominion to know that Soltano is doing good work at Randwick. A win in tho A.J.C. Derby for tho straight-going sportsman, Mr. T. H. Lowry, would be very popular. Unfortunately, owing to tho severo illness of his wife Mr. Lowry will bo unable to make the journey to Randwick to seo his horse raco.

iThe oablo from Sydney which mentioned a recent gallop bv Soltano doos not givo anj'thing outsido tho bald statement that it was a good gallop. We would all be pleased to know several little matters in connection with that gallop. First of all, did Oliver rido the colt, for, if so, that would tell us that he was carrying considerably more than his Derby weight. Then again, how did he do it, and was he on the inside or outside of Hallowmas? Again, how much extra ground did the pair cover ? Still, one concludes (as the cablo man says) it was a good gallop, but just howgood it was is not vouchsafed to us. Friday next is nomination day for the Napier and Dunedin meetings. Mr. H. Coylo will announce weights for thoHawko's Bay spring meeting on Friday noxt. • Golden Sk.v, who has bcooi wrong off and on for a considerable time, is giving trouble to her trainer, arid is to bo turned out nt To Mahanga for a oouple of months' spell. On the Hastings tracks nothing is going bettor at the present, time than the Stepniak mare Bliss. Track watchers there state that she is sure to win a good handicap this spring. Private advices received here state that La Reina is galloping exceptionally well at Ellerslie, and promises to bo vrcll forward by tho time that tho Neiv Zealand Cup comes round. The Auckland maro will proba.bly be raced at Trentham next month. At a meeting of the stewards of the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club, the following were elected a ground committee:—Messrs. W. H. Booth, -A. Baysh, J. Hodder, T. Ray, and C. Reid; hon. judge, Mr. J. W. Card; clerk of scales, Mr. H. M'Phee; handicapper, Mr. J. H. Pollock. Tho sum of £600 wag allotted for the programmo of the annual, race meeting, and it was suggested that tho trotting evonts be included in the programme. H. Catt was recommonded for a trainer's license.
