With reference to Mr. Wakeman's method of dealing with toitoi and cabbage tree leaves and flax as fodder for cattle, the observations mentioned wero brought tho notice of Majot Young of the Agricultural Department, by a Hawera "Star" reporter. The officer stated that tho properties of tho -three plants mentioned were wellknown to tlie Department and early settlers. and their ieeding value was practically nil, while their medical propertics as laxatives or tonics were unreliable. Very frequently, said Major Young, somo of these plants had caused the.death-of good cows so there_was nothing to recommend them, from either a commercial or a feeding point of view. Two or three gors© shrubs at the edge of a swamp contained more feeding properties than toitoi, cabbage trees, and flax all together.
