News has been received in Wellington . to tho effect that Colonel A. W. Robin, of tho colonial section of the War Office, has been deputed by the War Office Authorities to officially observe tho French Army manoeuvres, which commenced on September 11, and are to concludo on Friday- next. Mr. James M'lntosh, of Wyndham, wiho lias just paid a visit to the Lakes district, brought with him a. remarkable curio for ono whoso business is veterinary. This is a piece of manuka about 2in. long by Jin. in diameter. It liadi been embedded in the chest of a. horse for some two years, and Mr. M'lntosh siuccoeded in extracting it. The 'horse had probably been jabbed by a branch when feeding in a swamp.

Dr H. R. Mill, Director of the British Rainfall Organisation, and formerly president of tho Royal Meteorolo, cical Society, and secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, is about to take a year's holiday, and will bo coming to New Zealand in the Rotorua. It is stated that Dr. Mill, who is acknowledged to be the first authority m the world on rainfall matters, intends to spend most of his holiday time in this Dominion. Dr. Slater, of Kaikoura, arrived this week at Hanmor Springs, to take charge of tho sanatorium. * Mr. B.
