WANGANUI NOTES.

Wanganui, September 15,
Three territorials and four eadcts were brought before Mr. Kerr, S.M., for failing to attend drills. One of the former ' who had taken three months' "holiday" from duty was fined £1 and 7s. costs. Another, J. Lambess, who had previously been fined £4 for a of the Act, was mulcted in a like amount. The magistrate intimated that if the fine was not paid the defendant would be sentenced to four weeks' military detention. Another, S. E. Armstrong, it appeared, had a. medical certificate of exemption, but had not thought fit to notify the defence authorities of the same, and the magistrate, in dismissing the case, commented in strong terms on tho defendant's action. In the matter of the cadets two were acquitted, tho informations not being in order, whilo one was fined us. and another 10s. A Maori found to-day that ri prohibition order debars him from setting foot insido a hotel even if lie does not- get a-drink. Ho entered a hotel with a friend, but had no liquor, but his presence. there cost him 10s., tho amount of a fine inflicted by Mr. Kerr, S.M. A local draper before the stipendiary magistrate to-day was charged with making an entry in his wages book to tho effect tliat he paid' ono of his hands £2 15s. per week when only £2 10s. was paid. Defendant was fined £5 and a further £1 for employing an assistant at less than the award rate, whilo the assistant was fined 10s, for working for , leas than tha award provided.
