LOSSES BY STRIKES.
A GENERAL AVERAGE. SHIPOWNERS' SUGGESTION. :Tho New Zealand Marine Underwrit-ers'-Association ■■'lias forwarded to the Auckland Clumber of Commerce a proposal of the International Shipping Federation, Londo.i, to tile effect iliat hliipownersget- permission to insert in their bills of lading clauses makifig shippers or, consignors responsible for a share .of' espouses .inciirrpi by reason; of: strikes.;
In reply to a question, tho president stated at a meeting of the council of tlia Auckland Chamber on Friday that, under present conditions, losses caused by strikes became a lhattor for adjustment between the parties directly interested. The shipowners wished to make it pos-siltlo-to,insure against strikes .'as'against lire, thus, when losses occurred; making all consignors or consignees of cargo by the ship affected share equally*in a general average of tho loss. Sir. Beattio said that tho underwriters in Great Britain could, not. agree.to this request—as it was obvious that tho purpose of tho proposal was to bring all the interests involved under a general average when, loss occurred through, strikes. If consignors wanted it. and were prepared to pay for it, they could get a cover which actually secured them against loss by strikes; but- olio of tho fundamentals of tho underwriters' organisations was that they could not issue a strike insurance policy of the kind now apparently contemplated. . The. correspondence was icforred. to the Shipping Committee for consideration.
