UPPER WAIKANAE.
ROAD-MAKING AID TO BE SOUGHT. Government assistance is to he sought by' the Hutt County Council, in order that tho road from Upper Hutt to Waikanae, via Akatarawa, may be completed. The bridle-track, which ran through the beautiful bush for several miles over the hill, is gradually being formed into a road, and the day may licit be far distant when motor-cars will bo able to make the trip through this attractive pieco of country. Coming from Waikanae, the road now extends to the saddle at tho top of the hill, and for two miles or moro on tlio Upper Hutt side. Then there is a gap where the bridle-track remains, then another patch of formed road, until the old mill railway is readied. This extends for a mile or moro before coming to the formed road leading to Upper Hutt. Altogether, only about three miles remains to bo roaded, but it is the most expensive pieco on tho whole of the route. A Government* grant two or three years ago helped the work on considerably, but last year the county did not get any Government money to spend on the road, which, consequently, remaiiifl unfinished. Some idea of the present condition of tho road may lie gleaned from the fact that the County Eoad Inspector recently got through with his bicycle. Probably the trip could be made easily enough on a motorcycle from the Waikanae side.
