A NEW THEATRE

RENOVATION OF THE KING'S, Patrons oF~the King's Theatre will scarcely know the popular picture-house when it reopens its doors to tho public this evening.. For tho past weeli the theatre has been closed, to enable the proprietary to thoroughly renovate and Tedecorato from floor to ceiling. Wonders have been achieved in that time, and the' somewhat barn-liko appearance of the old King's has been entirely removed by arfistic means. Mr. George Coulter, the Sydney artist' and decorator, never spares himself when there is work to be done in a minimum amount of time, and .he has worked night and day -to get through in time, and tho result is rather astonishing. He has clothed the wholo of the auditorium in a warm-toned colour scheme, in which various shades of rose-pink predominate, with the result that tho wholo theatre is aglow with exhilarating colour.. The artist hand has not stopped at a shaded colour scheme and frieze, but has incorporated two large scenes in a painted oval-shaped frame. The proscenium' walls have boon graced with the airy figures of some beautiful nymphs,-and filigree work. The ceiling has been touched up to harmonise with the general'colour schema The best of Mr. Coulter's; work is to be seen in the entrance and dress circle foyer. The hanging clusters of flowers which form the central feature in each panel aro particularly well sketched, ana there is nice restraint in tho colours used. One of the features of the renovation is tho removal from the dress circle of the old wooden tip-up seats, and their substitution by handsome iron-framed tip-up seats, upholstered in crimson Utrecht velvet (similar to those -comfortable seats in His 'Majesty's Theatre). The front of the theatre has been attractively picked out in dark green and white, ancl the ground-floor entrance has been lined with asbestos plaster sheets, and prettily enriched by Mr. Coulter's facilo brush. .. Both entrances are to bo brilliantly illuminated with electric lights.
